Squeaking shocks?

Post by ismail »

If a shock squeaks are they buggered?
My ironman shocks are squeaking, removed them and had them checked out, they still work quite fine other than the squeak.
If I compress them they push out with no abnormal movement.

How can one fix this or must they just be replaced?

Hi Ismail.
Did the shocks still squeek when they were out of the vehicle?I know they use a poly bush on the eyes that sometimes takes a permanent set and the noise emmites from there.

Bit of a catch 22 situation, maybe. It could be that the seal on the stanchion is dry, and if that's the case, then what does one do? If you oil / grease the stanchion then it holds dust / dirt which becomes an abrasive paste and may shorten the life of the seal. I had a squeaky shock a long time back, and it wasn't the shock mount bushes, so I decided to take a chance. Instead of removing the shock to be able to get at the stanchion, I drilled a small hole (think it was about 6mm) at the top of the cover. This allowed me to insert the nozzle of an oil can (the pump type) .... I could 'feel' the stanchion with the nozzle and for about a week or so I would give it a small squirt of oil each evening (I figured that the oil would run down to the seal and some would slowly seep in). What it did I don't rightly know, but that shock never squeaked again ..... and the seal never leaked either.

Might be worth a try. Your call.
