Water Pump
Morning guys
It's that time in my 4Ys life when the water pump has decided that it is tired of working for me and is retiring. The problem being the cost of the OE from the stealers in comparison to the likes of midas.
Now as I have learnt all to well, it is sometimes better to bite the bullet now rather than be sorry later but the stealers want almost 6 times what midas want.
So my question to all who will answer is what has been your experience or what do you suggest?
I had a golf which I used pirate pumps and never had a problem but the Lux is unknown territory at the moment so a bit of advice would be greatly appreciated.
The way I see it is that I could put the pirate one on and buy a second as spare just in case and at a vastly less expense than the OE.
Help!!!! :?

Re: Water Pump
I agree, if the one from the stealers is 6 times the price, it will definitely not lasts 6 times longer. A water pump is one of those things that does not last for ever. Some time or other it has to be replaced. Generally Midas do not sell crap. I would go for the Midas one. I had the same experience with my Golf years ago, always bought the so called "pirate" parts from Goldwagen or Midas and never had problems.
Remember that the stealers do not have their own waterpump factory. They also buy them from a approved supplier and then put their sticker on it and sell it for 6 times the price. In the years when I still had my Golf, VW used ATE brake pads. They packed them in VW boxes and sold them for twice the price than the Midas ATE pads. Same pads, come from the same factory, only packed and marked differently. So actually you pay six times the price for the packaging, not the product.

What makes you say your water pump needs replacing? Have you had overheating?

Re: Water Pump
Hi Martin
My pump is leaking from the hole that sits just underneath the pulley. Which means that the rope seal on the inside has worn and soon the bearing will go Im sure.
After calling the steaalers and getting a price quote of R1138 I called Midas who wanted R95, quite a substantial difference. I thought it couldn't get better than that but called Commercial Auto Parts and got a quote of R68. They supply most of the taxis with 4y engines and parts.
A quick drive down the road and a quick check to make sure it was the right one and I bought two.
I figure we live and learn, and if it doesnt last long then maybe the OE would have been better.
No harm No foul and I benefit from experience and pass it on to others.

Re: Water Pump
At R68 you can buy can buy 16 water pumps for the price of one Toy OE pump and have change left. Let’s say the R 68 pump last only 12 months you will be using them for 16 years before you come to the cost of the OE pump. I bet you you will not finish 16 pumps before a Toy pump goes.
I remember about 10 years back I had a Golf II GTi. The outer CVs went and I phoned VW for a price. They wanted R1600 per side + R350 for the boot. I told the guy I only wanted the outer CV, not the hold sideshaft and 10% stake in VW. He did not think I was funny.
I then went to Gold(f)wagen and bought 2 new Lombro (if I remember correctly) CVs for R 300 a piece and new CV boots for R250 for all 4. Lombro is the OE manufacturer for many German vehicle manufactures like VW and Opel. While I was at Golfwagen the guy took me to the back of their store and showed me something interesting. He was busy taking CVs out of their original boxes and was placing them in VW labeled boxes. An assignment that was due for VW agents who bought from him because they were out of stock.

Re: Water Pump
I had the same experience with my golf but had learnt over the ten years I drove it that some parts were just better being bought from the stealer. A clutch cable for instance, when pirate used to crap out in 6 months or so at a minimal saving from the stealers price whereas the OE lasted years.
It is a pity there isnt a specialised Toy pirate parts dealer around, or is there one I don't know about?

Re: Water Pump
Where do you stay? In Pretoria there are one or two, but I have not used them yet, but with buying the Camry for Charmaine I might one of these days have to. I saw a place in Pretoria West called Nazeer's (IIRC) which claims to be a Toyota spares supplier on their signboard. Then there is also a place called Toysan New & Used Spares (012 3276887) also in Pretoria WestScooter wrote:I had the same experience with my golf but had learnt over the ten years I drove it that some parts were just better being bought from the stealer. I'm in Honeydew Ridge, JHB. I haven't heard about any specialised places out here but then again I might not have my ear low enought to the ground.
I wonder if their parts would be much different from the midas' and autozones of the world?!

Re: Water Pump
I have fitted quite a few Midas parts lately and have had no problem with them at all 8) However I will say things like water pumps oil pumps and so on need close inspection and more often then not one can see if a part is sub standard or not. But for the price I cant see a problem even if you just fit it as a temp measure.

Re: Water Pump
The prices would normally be on par with Midas/Autozone but a reputable specialised "brand" outlet (like Goldwagen for VW) might sometimes have a larger range of vehicle specific parts and they are more likely to stock OE manufacturers' products.Scooter wrote:I'm in Honeydew Ridge, JHB. Re: Water Pump
One little question, does your vehicle have a visco fan that bolts onto your waterpump or do you have a direct drive an blade.
If you are fitting a new waterpump, make sure that you also fit a new V-Belt and that the tension is correct, otherwise your new waterpump will not last.

Re: Water Pump
photo's showing the waterpump and visco fan, I am under correction, but I think you have two types of waterpumps for the 4Y, one for the std ridget fan and one for the visco fan?
Thus if your vehicle has the visco fan, I would fit the dealer one instead.
Just for interest, what make is the one from Midas/Autozone

Re: Water Pump
SC
Thanks for the advice. My fan is the viscous fan bolting onto the pump.
The pump make is a Tonii, which I have never heard of before but I will give it a try and see what happens. For the price I can't really go wrong and if I need to change it again at a later stage it wont be the end of the world.
Back in the day when I spent my days under cars working for mercedes I might have had a different opinion but for now I think I'll give it a go and see what happens.

One can also try Gemini Parts in Johannesburg. They seem to import Toyota parts themselves
