Fuel Tank Frustration

Post by Cinco »

It takes about 20 minutes to fill up with diesel on my D4D.

The nozzle on the fuel hose will not lock and so the fuel has to be leaked into the tank very slowly.

I have tried to get to the breather but cant as one would need to drop the tank.

Surely this is not normal?

Thanks

I had this happen to me once with a Verso I had. Would take about 15minutes to fill the tank. Toyota fits some sort of flap valve assembly at the point where the hose goes into the tank. This I'm guessing is to allow the flow of fuel into the tank but stops it from splashing up into the pipe whilst driving. This valve on the Verso got stuck. I just remove the feeder pipe and removed this device and problem was solved.

Maybe your van has a simular valve / device that does not the open anymore.

AFAIK it is an "anti spit back valve". There for when filling up to prevent spit back as the tank reaches its max mark.As the fuel goes in and suddenly hits the pocket of air in the top part of the tank (ballon effect) and the fuel will go up the filler pipe and spills out. This is an big problem on Chrysler vehicles.

Mine spits like that since I fitted the 2nd tank. Maybe I damaged that flap when I installed the extra pipe in the tank or maybe it is the 2nd tank that does the spitting.

I finally dropped my diesel tank and could find nothing wrong. I then checked inside the filler neck (pipe) and found a brass or copper sieve in the neck. Obviosly put there to prevent the siphoning out of diesel. Now I need to figure out how to strip out the filler neck so that I can remove the sieve.

Yip, sounds like an ASD - Anti Siphoning Device.... Did you buy new as these are usually fitted to fleet vehicles?

Also, what diesel are you using - Some add anti-foaming additives to reduce foaming which speeds up refuelling...

Cool, most brands have the additive - But some are better :)

Should not be too difficult to remove that ASD... Good luck!

Do you know if there was ever a long range tank fitted? Mine had one (which was removed before the sale) and I had endless hassles, until I took it to Cris Ingram of R&D Offoad, who replaced and rerouted one of the pipes, and now I can refill it as fast as I want to.

No I dont think a long range tank was ever fitted. I did phone my local Toyota dealer about it but the guy I spoke to did not know what I was talking about so I guess the sieve was a retrofit.

I finally fixed my problem after a groot vloek.
On the weekend I removed the offending sieve. It looks like the bottom plastic part of a jerry can filler attachment that broke off and fell into the diesel tank filler neck. That is why my own plastic extension is pop riveted to the attachment to prevent this from happening.
