IFS Questions

Post by Bazzer »

My 2.7 went in to have the gearbox redone and a new clutch fitted. When I collected it I drove it home, about 2km. I went fishing up in Zambia for 12 days and on my return my wife had used the vehicle. She said that there is a noise coming from the right front wheel. When I checked I saw that the place that repaired the gearbox had locked the wheel hub on the right and my wife drove it like that for about 300km at speeds exceeding 100km/h. The vehicle was in 2H for all of the above. Will this have damaged anything?

Nope... you should be fine. You don't have to unlock hubs as long as you drive in 2H. The reason the hubs are there is to minimise fuel consumption and vibrations by unlocking the hubs

I have the same problem. I had my clutch also replaced recently. I asked about the noise when ideling and was told the 2.7's are known for their noisy gearboxes. I am not a mechanic so can't say. I know it did not make the noise before the clutch was replaced. However, the clutch performs well and I have no problem with performans.
I do however also have a sqeek sound when the vehicle has reached its operating tempreture. It's only when you depress the clutch that the sound goes away, but while ideling and driving this sqeek appears. I have sprayed q20 where the sound comes from but this only helps for a day or so. Don't know what else to do about it.

Below the gearbox on the left side is a rubberboot, this has to do with the clutch and you can partially remove it, its from here I get the annoying sqeek sound.

You don't perhaps have this problem also?

Hi Guys, I have the same squeeky noise from my clutch and when warmed up the noise is gone... i have also noted that when pressing on the clutch a little bit the noise is there again... Like as id the clutch plate isn't pushed back enough and squeeks on the pressure plate. From what I have heard, this isnt serious and secondly it is either the pilot bearing in the front of the gearbox or the fork that catches slightly. One day when I open the gearbox up, I'll have a good look to see what's up.

They call this the "sonbesie" noise (chickeda [spelling?]). It is caused by part in the cluch release mechanism and Toyota released a technical memo about this. They are supposed to treat this part with some sort of Lithium grease and the noise will be gone. It is not only on the 2.7 but the KZTE as well.

TSA seems not to know about this as by bakkie came back from a clutch replacement with the same noise and they also tried to tell me that it is like that!??!! Most of us would say release bearing or such, but some searching on the Net revealed this info.

Problem is that the gearbox needs to be removed for this lube to be done, so get it done sooner rather than later (labour!!) or learn to live with it.

Thanks Theunis,

Thought it is something simple!... In my case I'm going to live with it, besides its not as bad as it seems...

So lesson learned, lube-up with some grease and don't get someone who works on race cars everyday to change your clutch, even if it is on the 23rd of December @ Zwartkops raceway.

Shall we continue this old thread?

I have had this problem on my FJ62 cruiser since forever and it drove me crazy. I accepted it as part of an old vehicle and did the Q20 thing to get rid of my OCD issues every so often..
So the FJ62 is now gone and i aquired a d4-d - and voila! - the sonbesie/kriek has returned to haunt my issues agian :(
Sjoe Toyota!? 20 years later and still the same kriek?
