help needed with SFA leaf spring info

Post by krazy_kameleon »

Hi Guys,

I am hoping 1 of you suspension bofs out there can assist me.
While I recover from the cost of my "rebuild" I want to rebend/tension my leaf spring. I have seen this done in articles on the web with a fair amount of success but could not find how much to rebend them.

What is this distance in the sketch for a standard "new" spring and is there a difference front and rear? anyone know if I can "overbend" for a height increase?

This is just in the interim until I can splash out on a new Mikem set

Cheers

Give Darrell at Mikem a shout. Even though you are not yet fitting their suspension, he is very knowledgeable and will gladly give you some advise

When you do have the info please post it here.... :beg:

I have got some advice.
If you heat spring steel it does loose a small amount of its tension...
So with that in mind, try get someone to strip the pack and COLD roll them 1 by 1 to the new shape then repack the spring pack....
That way they SHOULD last a little longer than the heated way.

You will need a sizeable jack to do that successfully and of course you will have a problem finding something strong enough to hold the stops ... then there's a major safety factor. Rather go to someone that has a proper hydraulic press. I did this successfully almost 7 months ago to a sagging spring and thus far all is still well. Read the report here

I used to reset them with my hydraulic press and two press-blocks, you have to press each leaf separate and about 50 mm aprt, that gives you about ten bends per leaf, quite a time consuming task, nowadays i use my exhaust pipe bender.
