Wind Deflactors - Cortina Flappies

Post by ThysdJ »

A while ago I asked Gysie from Gomad to bend 2mm alu sheet into the same shape as the corners of my aluminium canopy.

He attached them with 20mm spacers to the back end of the canopy to act as wind deflectors. These deflectors served the same purpose as those chrome flaps the old timers had on the back of their Cortina/Valiant station wagons. Hence we called them Cortina Flappies. Wind flows into the gap from the front as the vehicle moves forward, and then gets blown out the back across the back end of the canopy.

From the front:
Image

And from the behind:
Image

Image

From a distance you can hardly notice them:
Image

These things WORK! After driving 700km on very dusty roads the only dust on the back of the vehicle was a little bit that got stuck to the window rubber. The rear window, rear canopy door and even the tailgate was dust free. Okay not entirely, but almost..

Image

Image

If my logic is correct, the wind flow across the back of the vehicle also breaks the vacuum that gets created behind the vehicle, reducing the drag.. Where are the air-flow specialists? Could that be true?

I have a few more wind deflecting ideas up my sleeve. Let's see where this takes us.

PS They dont work so well with mud...

ja Cassie, that is true... My mother in law didnt complain one little bit about diesel fumes and dust after our trip...

I did have the front slider of the canopy open to pressurize the canopy and keep the dust out. That is an old trick I have been doing for many years..  We were caught out a bit though,on the Ceres/Calvinia road we kept the slider closed because of rain.. but the road was still dusty, and some dust got sucked in the back.. not much, but still enough to be annoying.. :frustrated: :frustrated:

What happened there Neil? Could you not get it closed? Does the catch keep opening by itself? Or did the catch not catch the frame any more?

Mine did the same. It is the weight on top of the roof that does that. I told Gysie to add a piece of 50x6mm alu to the inside of the frame to brace it against the inside of the loadbin and problem was solved.

The problem is that the load-box flexes to much, a quick-fix is to either add a lip to the frame, or weld a bigger washer onto the adjuster bolt

Ja, Thys, .... good idea to fit them for gravel / dust conditions .... doubt you will achieve any improved aerodynamics / fuel efficiency though. :D: It's as Cassie said .... it goes a long way to neutralising the turbulence behind the squared off back end, which is responsible for the dust deposits on the back. Dust from the wheels coming through under the vehicle as well as along the sides is sucked into the 'vacuum' behind and is trapped in the turbulence for a short time up against the back. With the 'deflectors' (side scoops sounds more accurate), the turbulence is less and occurs a little further back .... less dust deposit.

Interesting to note is that VW Beatles and similar 'fast-back' shaped vehicles never had that problem. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

And Neil, replace that crappy foam-rubber seal at the bottom of the canopy with proper d-rubber. The foam compresses as soon as you start loading stuff on the top. Once the foam gets compressed the bolts holding the canopy is loose. Recipe for disaster..

D-Rubber does not compress. You'll see the rubber in that last 2 pics I posted..

Hi,i have now tested the canopy with no load, even on tar she keeps opening. It seem as if the area that she locks onto is at an angle.I've also adjusted the bolt to a stronger clamp and also looser, problem still there.
I'm going to fit two alli plates with a lip on to prevent this from happening. Can i remove the two back boxes, are they sealed and therefore need to be resealed ?

Why don't you change your back locks to the new larger ones?

ThysdJ wrote:And Neil, replace that crappy foam-rubber seal at the bottom of the canopy with proper d-rubber. The foam compresses as soon as you start loading stuff on the top. Once the foam gets compressed the bolts holding the canopy is loose. Recipe for disaster..

D-Rubber does not compress. You'll see the rubber in that last 2 pics I posted..
So what you are saying is you like D-Rubber but not D-Foam... :mocking:

what did you use to fix D-Rubber to D-Canopy.. :surrender: ( sorry could not resist).Might also want to go that route..also anyone know where I can get D-Rubber in Pta?
