Replacing a 2.5d4d with a 3.0d4d engine???

Guys, some advise please :?: I bought a very nice 2.5 d4d recently. I can get hold of a 3.0 d4d engine (new) at a VERY decent price. I need to start looking at replacing my injectors (230 000km on the clock). The motor is in very good nick and has a full agent service history.

My thinking is; replace injectors, put free flow exhaust and install an intercooler. If I add all the costs it comes out to a fair amount of money. I believe that I can buy the 3.0l motor and sell my current 2.5l motor and break even?

This is now where I need some help:
1) Is it possible to replace my current motor with the 3.0l motor
2) What extra mods do I need to do (the bonnet scoop is one!)
3) What about the engine management
4) What price should I aim for when selling the complete 2.5l motor and is there a healthy market for 2nd hand motors
5) Has anyone done it before and is it a good idea
6) Any other advice on what to replace or service at this high kilos

My plan is to keep the Hilux for a very looooooooong time. The car is in very good condition, mechanically, exterior body and interior.

Thanks,

Dawid.

The 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV engine blocks are virtually identical. I haven't researched it in detail but it should be close to a bolt-in conversion assuming the 1KD is complete.

You'll need the gearbox, wiring harnasses , Turbo driver ecu and plenty of hours and patience. Better to buy a 3.0l Hilux

Hi Dawie

230000 kilo sounds low for injector replacement .I have a 2.0 l Ford TDCI 330000 kilo injectors are still good ,maybe they can just be serviced

Hi Martin,

I had the Hilux in to install a Dastek Unichip. The guy who did it told me that I need to start looking at replacing my injectors at some stage? He quoted me R10 000 for the lot. I am not a diesel fundi and do not know the ins and outs for injectors, hence the idea to replace the motor and get all new stuff. The finances made sence to me if I can sell my motor. This obviously, was based on the assumption that is a straight swop.

What is your view on reconditioning injectors and the cost?

Cheers.

I'm starting to sense a trend with the guys at dastek telling everybody to change their injectors. I've heard it twice before!! That same bakkie went to the dealers, which said the injectors were still in good condition. Just wondering...

Get a second opinion if it is not going to cost you. Have not heard of that 2.5 motor needing to have the injectors changed on a low milage.

Just an update from my side. I did not replace the motor after listening to some good advice  however, I de-catted the exhaust, replaced the silincer with a free flow silincer, installed an Dastek unichip and a Cirrus inter cooler. I am getting the Hilux back this week-end and will be able to comment on the "new" performance by next week :yahoo:

I sold my 2,5 d4d with 330 000km on the clock with the original injectors still as I got it. I did a check at Toyota on the injectors and all was still in spec. I only filled up with 50ppm where possible.

Hey dawid ,I am going to speak to those who want to change from 2.5l to 3.0l d4d, but they want to do it to their Toyota quantum.well the 3.0l fits but there must be a few adjustments,if you have your 2.5l engine don't sell it because you will need a few things from it.here is what you'll need from your 2.5 engine:intake manifold, oil filter stand that has a cooler in it,turbo, the crankshaft sensor clip on is different and wont start if your colour codes are mistakenly connected, you'll need a oil samp because the 3.0 Bakkie has a oil samp that holds a bit more oil so in the Bakkie the samp is a bit bigger it wont fit on your quantum because of the cross member chest so u need your 2.5l samp and the oil strainer stand/filter the one that sucks oil from samp to engine has to be cut and joined by welding to have the right position to mount it to accommodate your samp.yeah guys that's about it,it should run if u get your crank sensor connected well.good day I love toyota

Eish... that sounds like ALOT to do to change the engine.
Not to mention scary... changing the sump with lower capacity than the 3.0 was designed for.
Not for me thanks.

Don't know if Quantam came with 3.0, but for hilux, i'd rather sell 2.5 and buy 3.0

Thank you sibusiso, that is valuable information.
So the sump and oil pickup change is only when you want to install it in a Quantum, not a bakkie, bakkie I presume you keep the original sump?
