Spare wheel with long range tank.

Post by gary955 »

Hi,

I'm having a bit of an issue in getting my spare wheel off my Hilux (2012), which was purchased with a long range tank. The spare wheel is now lower than normal, so I'd like to take it off when offroading, but this has become a bit of a challenge.
I connected the 3 rods, tightened the screws and inserted the rod into the spare wheel removal hole, but it wouldn't do anything more than a budge. Then the front rod got stuck and stayed behind when I removed the rod.
Do they change this setup when adding a tank ? I've battled to try and reconnect the rods, but with not much success.
Help . . .

Thanx
Cheers

I had the same problem the wheel hoist and the tank hole don't line up properly. I ended up cutting the slot at the back after positioning the tank correctly now it works fine

Hi Drikus,

That sounds like a pretty big job . . .

I'm going to Toyota this arvie to see if they can assist with this.
I hope I don't need to take such drastic action.

Gary, check if the chain hanging through the hole in the long range tank does not have a lock or cable tie/wire preventing you from letting the spare wheel down. This is to prevent THEFT...

Hi Gary no changes to the spare wheel set up, I think it maybe locked as mentioned above or sometimes its winded the wrong way around, try turning the right. Good luck

It seems something in that spare wheel unlock tunnel has changed.
The attached shows what it should look like, but the connection I
see in mine (with a torch), doesn't look anything like this.
Anyways, bakkie was 2 days at Toyota while they tried to figure this
out. Can collect this morning.
I'll update on their findings/solution.

So they managed to pry the wheel locking tool out. Excellent idea, but useless without the key . . . :eh:
