Exhaust pump for tyres?
I have been wondering for a while why no one has designed a pump for tyres that works off the exhaust like those air jacks. Surely there is more gas flow than what our 12v units can put out.Pressure can also not be a problem.
If it is a question of the gas being too hot then maybe the gas can be used to drive a pump like it does a turbo?
I would love to hear from the technically proficient people on this site.

When I still had a petrol I had one of these pumps where you took out on of the plugs and put an adapter in there and you start the car.The engine compression than supplied the air. That thing was extremely powerful and could bead a tyre easily.

Here in Nigeria, they use an old air con pump that is connected to a honda engine via a fan belt. It works, so i was thinking that in an emergency situation one can try that.

After all the cost and hassels one might as well just buy a 4x4 heavy duty 12v compressor.Nickey wrote:Here in Nigeria, they use an old air con pump that is connected to a honda engine via a fan belt. It works, so i was thinking that in an emergency situation one can try that.
Reading about using an aircon as a compressor, one has to add a few tsp of oil into the aircon to lubricate it as it gets it lub from the oils added into the aircon gas- some thing to that effect.
An expensive but similar idea would maybe work ,is to make a separate air storage tank and take a feed off the compressor ( the one you use to jack up the air suspensions) to fill this tank.

Re: Exhaust pump for tyres?
Aircon compressor works great. You connect the air intake of the compressor to the tappet cover breather and it will get lubricated from there.

Re: Exhaust pump for tyres?
Buy a York 210 compressor that has a sump, try and fit it in the engine bay, if it doesn't fit(like in my case) connect it to a 2kW+ starter motor with a 2:1 ratio at least, then you have a serious bad ass wheel pump... a few points to note though is you need a oil trap on the outlet, 25mmsq+ SHORT as possible power cables, a lot of patience in finding the right stuff to make it work...
