Help to understand chrome plating?

Post by Kaspaas »

Okay,

1) Can you only chrome plate bare metal?

2) Can you just re-chrome faded chrome parts, or do you need to sandblast to bare matal?

3) Other than Goldfinger plating in Epping, any other chrome "platers" in CT that do the prepping of the metal aswell?

I have old BMX frames and parts that I'm busy restoring.

If the old chrome has no rust popping through, you just need to polish it if it's dull.

If there are any rust spots, re-chroming over the old won't work well as it will leave unsightly pitting. You would have to sandblast to bare metal. As I recall, bare metal has to be cleaned in an acid bath, buffed to a shine, first copper plated and then chrome plated and buffed again.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Busy with the Khuwi, this BMX has been mine from day one, used to race it in the late 80'ties
