Bigger tyres for 4.0 A/T
Hi guys/girls,
Myfirst day on the forum, hallo to all. I have a 4.0 DC 4x4 Auto, which i have chipped and taken the cats out and would like to consider going bigger on tyre size. I currently run on 31inch BF A/T's and am considering the 32 inch equivalent. Can anyone offer comments? I have had some general comments of caution to expect power loss.

On my 3.5 Pajero you can not use bugger tyres for day to day driving as the ratio change causes the GB to kick out of lock up in 5th and hunt between 4 th and 5th regularly, the Toy might have a similar problem.
I have a set of 33s that I use for off roading and with them I switch her to manual mode when going on the highway and lock her in 4th.

Gents, thanks for the warm welcome. It's good to see that the toyota boys can stand together like the landy guys do. They ofcourse do it for support in difficult times.
I think i will opt for using the bigger tyres and steel rims when playing and sticking to the trusty 31 BF's when I travel far. I just came back from playing in the kalahari dunes and i was quite curious to see what difference it could have made with bigger tyres. Plus the bigger tyres look a bit less 'm-*-f-f-i-e'

This is cool news, it is close to Upington, a town we regularly visit. I will definitely go have a look there.. Do you perhaps have contact details for this place?Mornes wrote:the route's name is Trans Boegoe 4x4. you camp next to the Boegoeberg dam and then travel about 20 odd km to the playgrounds. we played for 2 full days, and i still didnt get enough. had a nice crowd of Toyotas, 5 x 4.5 EFI's and D4D Hilux, New Mazda 3l diesel and a 4l Jeep Cherokee.

Re: Bigger tyres for 4.0 A/T
Hi guys,
some feedback after fitting my 32 BF's. in the bigger picture id do it again. It makes a noticeable difference when off roading. The vehicle just seems to grip better and im sure the half an inch lift for the diff didnt hurt either.
one would not be able to do this with out doing a suspension lift though, mine has been lifted and does catch slightly in the front.
also watch the speedo and odo, i currently under read on distance by about 5% and speedo is now as accurate as can be.

Re: Bigger tyres for 4.0 A/T
Hi guys,
I am itching to fit larger tyres and would like to hear from guys that have done it.
I am considering upgrading to at least 33's on a 16 inch rim (305/70/16) and possibly to the 35 inch upgrade offered by 4wd Truckin or Muscle Trucks.
I have an Auto V6 Vigo Hilux fitted with a TRD supercharger.
I look forward to your comments!

Re: Bigger tyres for 4.0 A/T
I cannot say with definitive certainty, but I think that 33's are going to catch badly. So what are the possible options to overcome the problem. As I see it, the rear should be OK with a moderate suspension lift but it's always the front that's a problem. You can only lift an IFS so far before you run into a snag with the operating angle of the CV's where you have to do a diff drop. (This sort of defeats some of the objective of gaining some diff clearance).
Another option is to enlarge the wheel wells, but that poses some problems of it's own besides just bodywork, like the availability of extra space at the door pillars and foot-wells. Is the hassle and expense warranted?
Then there's a body lift. Probably not good enough on it's own with the normal 50mm, but in combination with a moderate suspension lift (without needing to do a diff drop) I think it should get you there.
Also curious to hear how others have tackled this.

Chat to Hoppy (Allan Venter) - he's converted a few IFS's to fit 33's, maybe even 35's.

Looking very good!
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

.
It does look nice... very aggressive.
But it also looks a bit snug. I think a lift is needed else it will defeat the purpose.

Re: Bigger tyres for 4.0 A/T
Hi all.
Although the clearance seems ok for now, I do believe it is going to be needed for proper articulation.
I have OME suspension in currently, but I'm a bit worried that a spacer is going to lift me too high and cause bad drive shift angles?
Who could advise me on this?
Thanks!

Re: Bigger tyres for 4.0 A/T
You could still do the body lift without any further change to the shaft angles. Or you could space it higher and do a diff drop.
