KZTE Overheating
A buddy of mine has a double cab KZTE.
He has been having overheating issues lately and a loss of power when this happens.
Yesterday he discovered that the coolant is not moving to the bottom of the engine.
What can cause this?
Why would it loose power as well?

Re: KZTE Overheating
Cracked head or blown gasket. Been there done that same symptoms. Remove head. Send it in for pressure and ultrasonic testing. If head is fine refit with new original steel toyota head gasket. With new head bolts! Add a 74 deg thermostat.
Once a KZ has overheated and started to lose power its almost always the head or the gasket.
I suspect the thermostat seized and caused overheating leading to cracked head or blown gasket.

jip ... classic cracked head symptoms .... next he will complain of massive ball of smoke when it finally does start.
Read up on AMC heads.

Take it straight to 4xLux. Francois KNOWS these motors !! And he has replaced many of these heads !! Did the same for my friends Prado's KZTE motor.

Thanks Guys, Yes it does smoke quite a bit.
I will forward him the link to this and hear what he has to say. I think he did get an opinion, and was told its to do with the turbo. I do stand corrected though

Re: KZTE Overheating
If the coolant does not reach the bottom of the engine I think it is a stuck thermostat.
Whether the head is cracked or not, if the thermostat is working correctly the coolant will still reach the bottom of the engine. I would remove the thermostat and test it, if the hot water then reach the bottom of the engine it is it. But if it overheated and lost power in the process I am afraid it most probably already did some damage..... like a cracked head.

Re: KZTE Overheating
I did mention to him that it is likely the thermostat. Unfortunately he is out of town for a few days, so we will only be able to see most likely next week.

Re: KZTE Overheating
It's possible that your coolant has coagulated and is blocking the water ways. This would ultimately put a huge stress on your head, probably leading to a cracked head.
I can vouch for the AMC Head, had one fitted to my Prado when the OEM failed at 280k kms.
Good luck man!

Hi Guys,
(might be a silly question)
Is it difficult to replace the thermostat or can it be done at home?
and I take it that all this does is makes the temp gauge more accurate??

Not difficult to replace the thermostat. It will not do anything for the accuracy of your temp guage.

Re: KZTE Overheating
Difficult is a relative term. The thermostat housing is in a awkward place. You need to undo 5 bolts/nuts and drain the radiator to get the thermostat out. Taking the battery or airbox out (depends on which side yours sit) makes the job easier.CoolBreeze wrote:Hi Guys,

Remember to buy a new gasket for the thermostat too.

Re: KZTE Overheating
Ok, so finally there is an answer to some of the powerloss and engine problems.
It turns out to be the injector pump. Toyota wants 20k and the people working on it say they can fix/refurbish it for 13k.
