2.4 diesel 2.8 diesel hilux fuel consumption

I've been doing some research looking for a good older(cheaper) work bakkie. I would like to know what fuel consumption I can expect on the old 2.4, 2.8 diesel motors. What should I look out for? Any weaknesses? I have been looking at the KB diesel range but cannot bring myself to buy a bakkie I will not love. Perhaps I need to buy a Hilux with a kb 280 diesel engine

I get around 10-11l/100km in my 2.8. They like to crack heads or blow gaskets

My 2.4d d/cab 4x4 gives me between 8 and 10 km/l depending on roads traveled.

Do they run rubber or chain timing belts? I cant remember.

rubber and the 2.4 in my opinion is the better just to cam belt as per book.
