Turbo not working. Think it's carbon. How do I clean?

Post by fpjeepy05 »

I have a 84 hilux with the 2lt. Yesterday it lost all power, smoke everywhere. Limped home. Today I took off the intake and the turbo seems to be a little locked up. I can turn the blades, but they don't spin freely. There is almost no smoke at idle when the air isn't running through the compressor. But then i throttle up tons of smoke. And the turbo turns, but doesn't spool up, just turns a little.

How do I clean/restore the turbo? I think there is less than 50,000 on the turbo, so I would guess its not worn just filled with carbon.

Fielding, you will get more replies in the week. To me it seems to be the bearings, but I am not very clued up on turbos.

Is there any metal to metal sounds coming from the turbo when you rev up? Was the turbo full of oil? I would guess one of the seals failed and now the oil is going out the exhaust hence the smoke. And if the impellers don't spin freely its also indicating that it ran without oil and started to pick up. If that is the case the turbo must be overhauled

Turns out there was a cracked / loose manifold in front of the turbo. So I'm not sure which one was causing the issue. But the turbo is chalk full of carbon so I'm hoping that cleaning it out will fix the problem. Now I just have to find an exhaust manifold here in the US. Suggestions?

If the manifold is just loose then take it off replace all gaskets and fit again. If it is cracked and you are struggling to find parts, let someone weld it for you.

And then cleaning the turbo, I have found that carb cleaner works well on choked up EGR valves so give that a try.

Check the bearings hey.
Wynn's brake & part cleaner works well.

Good luck!

Not to be alarmist but I think you are probably looking at a turbo rebuild or replacement (worst case). The high volumes of smoke seem to indicate that the bearings have gone damaging the oil seals. That would explain the smoke.

I'll try cleaning it if I get the manifold welded up and see how it goes.
