7MGE EFI to Carb conversion?

Good day all,
Need some advice, (maybe it's actually just moral support, because by now I'm so g@tvol with this thing I think my days of owning an SFA are coming to an end).

My previous dilemma was getting my 7MGE install completed. That has now finally been completed, and since getting the vehicle back I hit my first snag, within the second tank of fuel. (Which didn't even take me 250km).

The snag I hit was that the Spitronic (Pluto) ECU which was fitted has blown. Looks like one of the rectifiers has popped.
It also popped the Lamda (5A) fuse. I replaced the fuse once and it immediately popped the second one too.
I called Spitronics who didn't have any advice really, other than, "where did you have it installed etc. take it back there . . . ".
I guess this is understandable, but having relocated to Richards Bay this isn't an option. Nor am I up for dealing with incompetent/disinterested service providers.

After I got towed home and accepting that I am dealing with a new, major, issue, I called the guys at Spitronics again. I was referred to one of the technicians who was somewhat helpful, but the fact is, the unit is fried. So Spitronics seem accustomed to repairing these units, which frankly, doesn't give me much confidance to take a road trip further than the corner cafe.

This, combined with the absolute abysmal fuel consumption, I thought of simply putting a Carb onto the motor, rather than living in this constant state of worry, waiting for the van to leave me in the lurch again.

Any thought?

I'd say stick it with a new Spits ECU, they are usually highly reliable. Spits also sell well priced Lambda sensors if your other one is fried.

A carb conversion on your motor would be a big slep nê

Gerald, do you still have your original airflow meter installed?

No, all the sensors were replaced with the Spitronic stuff.

If it was not for me having the OEM management system, I would also have gone the Spitronics route.

Rectifier..? Why would there be a need on a DC system?
My advice would be to get hold of a diagram and start checking the wiring harness, starting with the lambda sensor.

You could also try Schalk @ Dynologic repairs in Pta, apparently a fundi on the Spitronics 012 547 1111

Not to high-jack your post Cy
But after my complete engine rebuild back to original Toyota spec and 33's fitted I get 7.2 - 7.5 km\L. (no load - open road @ 110km/h)

Towing a trailer with my Suzuki DR loaded coming from Upington I achieved 6.8 travelling @ 110 km/h on the speedo (122km/h True speed)

If we ever meet I'll tell you about my dune drags against EFI's and V 6 cruisers in the Big Red.

I was led to believe that the 7M is a bit finicky and parts are becoming scarce... I take it then that it's just a myth?

As for the Lexus conversion... Very nice.
IMO, it sounds awesome, and you get to say you have V8 under the hood. Neither of which I have an issue with.
In reality though, (again, just my opinion), there's too much power. The stories of hearing so many guys braking prop shafts and diffs and gearboxes and what not, accompanied by the real cost. That just scared me off.

I forget the source, but one of our members, who does this for a living, wrote a very informative post putting things into perspective when doing the Lexus conversion. He mentioned how so many guys were asking why the conversion is so expensive when, "...I can get the motor for R7500...".
Getting it installed correctly, properly cooled and Dyno'd is where the trick comes in, as was his point.

As for the 7M motor, I am very happy with the power, (from what I was able to experience in the short time it was running).
I guess the frustration for me right now is that I have to go and redo something which I have already paid money for...
It seems to me, few people take pride in their work now days and that mediocrity and poor service is common place in the world we live in.

I probably have the terminology wrong as for the 'Rectifier' statement. What meant was, the thingy-majig which has the smoke inside has lost it's smoke... now nothing works.
