Dual battery - Revo 2.8
I need to install a dual battery setup and ordered a bracket from Frontrunner.
I've mounted the bracket. It's a good fit. I'll pop down to my local battery guy and pick up a battery over the weekend.
I won't be installing a deep cycle as I have no need for a deep cycle and it probably won't fit. There isn't much space in that hole.
That brings me to the actual issue.
I want to power the following off the second battery:
One or two 2 way radios - the jury is still out on the second one.
Back worklight.
Side worklights.
Inverter.
Possibly a winch down the line. We'll see... I still have a tricked out V8 with an oval badge that has a very nice winch. If I need to pull a comms tower up, I'll use it.
There are no fridges, or other items that draw large currents.
First I need to get charge power to the second battery. I'm not going to install a CTEK system. I can't go super cheap and cheerful and use a Cole Hersey solonoid with a trigger from the alternator. That will probably end up blowing the ECU up
My thoughts are to use a VSR. I have them on the shelf in my workshop and I know they work.

The big question is, where does one put a fuse box, a VSR and a couple of relays in this engine compartment?
The only place with a little bit of space is near the brake master cylinder. There are even tapped holes there, so I could make up a nice frame to bolt the stuff onto. BUT it's right next to the turbo. We all know how hot they become. I figured there has to be a reason Toyota left that space open.
Any help in identifying a location to mount fuses and relays would be much appreciated.
An off the shelf solution like the Frontrunner bracket would be first prize.
Surely I'm not the first person who's done this.

Cobus - PLEASE try and post those pics ASAP, also as much details as you can?? Who did this for you??
What size battery is that - 105??
I'm also looking at something like this ASAP, and I like your setup.
Just a quick question - I'm sort of chipping in here but it's still Thread Relevant...........is it an absolute MUST to try match your batteries' Amps, or not really??
Thanks Cobus.........I was worried about the 2nd battery thing!!

Hi Petri, TJM PTA east did the battery install and the cables to the back, it is a 110 amp battery, you can decide what battery to fit. 90,105,110 it must fit.
I fitted the CTEK. Still to be fitted is the fuse box at the back to feed the. tyre pump, fridge and inverter.

Petri the answer to this depends on your method of charging.petri oosthuizen wrote:Cobus - PLEASE try and post those pics ASAP, also as much details as you can?? Who did this for you??

1) Alternator only - this way the two batteries are in parallel. This way the two batteries really should be identical in all respects. (jip, I know many have connected different batteries like this for years ,,,, just providing the correct technical answer)
2) Chanrge via a dc-2-dc charger - now the one battery does not see the other. Any combination is now possible ...

Re: Dual battery - Revo 2.8
BAIE dankie Chris. I want a dc-dc charger that also has solar inputs. I'd also like to have sort of "freedom of choice"over the aH of the second battery.
Must say, I will also look at a nice complete portable setup. I can use that in other vehicles too, and can camp with the fridge not having to be in the vehicle all the time.
Portable setup I can use in the Hilux, the Kombi if we go away with it and want to use the NL, the Cruiser for jackal, and the Pinzie, being a 24 Volt system, can then also have 12 Volt stuff like spot lights/fridge. etc etc.
