rear diff pan

Hello everyone!! Im planning on draining my rear diff oil but theres no drain plug so im guessing i have to remove the back pan of the diff, does anyone have the torque setting for those bolts ? i would really appreciate it !!! and is there anything i should have a look at inside the diff since im going to open it?

If there's no problem with the diff then I wouldn't even remove the cover entirely but just crack the seal carefully without damaging the gasket. If the oil being drained is 'milky' it means that water has got into it - then I would remove the cover entirely so as to clean and inspect the gear teeth for pitting. Also check for any metal 'shavings' that might be present in the catch tray after draining.

If the cover gasket has not been damaged, re-use it and just nip the bolts up firmly (I don't have torque settings), but don't over tighten.

ok ill do that thanks, i did the gearbox and transfer box a few days back and there were brass specs in the old gear oil.

That brass is from the syncro rings .... perhaps not a good sign. How is the gear selection?

ok, its very smooth no problems when shifting, think i caught it in time, ive used genuine toyota oil so should be fine, the vehicle is much more smoother

feedback on this, i removed the pan but the gasket tore, and was going bad, as there was rust on the mating surfaces, probably due to age and moisture, so sanded both surfaces with 600 grit paper after the diff oil had drained, then cleaned both surfaces with methylated spirit and used rtv silicone and torqued the bolts to 25nm waited 24 hours and filled new diff oil, the manual said 2.2 liters but i only managed to fill about 1.8-1.9 liters before it was full, is this because there"s diff oil in the half shafts also ? also cleaned the breather as it was clogged up. no leaks so far !

Well done. The volume could be because of the ½ shafts, as long as it's full you're good.

Unblocking that diff breather is an important factor of what you've done. Chances are that it will block again because there is a small amount of oil weapage that occurs there and this collects grime and dust. A good solution with other benefits is to fit high level breathers - very inexpensive to do, and you never have to worry about it again.

ok Ill have a look, somone told me fitting a tube and cable tying it onto the chassis somewhere may also work, but ill search and see what other options there are. Thanks once again!

The chassis is too low, and you have to have something on the end of the tube that prevents ingress of dirt and water. A fuel filter is cheap and as long as it is high up, like in the engine compartment, it works well because it's not a valve and allows free air movement in both directions.
