Oil leak on 1999 2.7 Hilux

Post by Zaskar09 »

Morning all,

I recently inherited my father's Hilux, it's a 1999 2.7 DC 4x4. It used to be his pride and joy but the last couple of years his health has been going downhill so unfortunately a few things has been left a bit too late and will now need fixing.

The most concerning of these is an oil leak that seems to be originating in the vicinity of the oil filter but I don't think it's the filter itself (thought it might be so that was the quickest and easiest fix). There's oil all around the sump but it's definitely worse on the driver side (oil filter side).

Next option would probably be the sump seal (excuse my lack of proper terminology) but I don't want to go ahead and drop the diff if there's an easier fix.

I'm certainly no mechanic but about 95% of the time when I take things apart I can get them back together again so I was hoping to try and fix it myself.

Any suggestions to what this might be?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome Christiaan!

It would seen t like the sump gasket is leaking if it's oily all around the motor and could be that it's leaking more on the drivers side but it could also be that the oil filter seal is leaking as well.

What I would suggest to start with is to clean the motor off properly with an engine cleaner (don't do this on paving or anywhere where grime will result in soiling / staining). Then keep an eye on it and see where it seeps from. A small amount of weeping one can live with, but if it gets to the point where there is even a little dripping oil, the problem should be addressed.

Good luck - hope it's not serious. :winkx:

Thanks for the quick reply,

It's about a drop or two overnight so I would like to sort it out asap. I'll clean it off and see where it comes from. Hopefully it's the oil filter seal but I'll keep you posted.

I also downloaded the workshop manual, thanks for that!

After cleaning everything off the leak is definitely coming from the filter housing.

I found this thread on another forum:

https://www.yotatech.com/f2/oil-filter- ... er-196428/

Ordered the gasket from Toyota, I also ordered some other stuff so I can't remember what the actual cost of the gasket was but it's in the vicinity of R50-R70 IIRC. The o-ring I would have had to wait about 4 weeks from Toyota so the parts guy said I should remove the housing and take the o-ring to my local hardware store and get one from there (apparently it's a common size). The parts should be there this afternoon so I might tackle this tonight and let you know if it worked.

PS. The part number for the gasket is in the linked thread.

Glad to hear that it's nothing major.
