Hilux 3.0 D4D Gearbox Oil Change

Post by Tony Cummings »

Hi Guys,
I'm the proud owner of a 2016 Hilux D/Cab 3.0 D4D Legend 45 Auto.
I have just had my 50,000 km service done at Rivonia Toyota and am extremely happy with all work done.

One thing I would like to know... and I asked the service adisor when the gearbox oil gets replaced, he couldn't tell me. What he did say is that it's not included in the 90,000km service plan. He said, if I want to, he can replace it at the next service.

Can anyone out there give me advice please. Is it necessary at this stage, what is the normal replacement period.

I'm of the "old school" that believes.....oil is cheap, repairs expensive.

Manual or Auto?

IMHO Gearbox oil doesn't need to be replaced on a manual in the first 150,000 km unless there is a problem like notchy gear changes, water contamination and the like. On an auto it needs to be replaced but I'm not sure of the intervals.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I replaced the gearbox and transfer case oil on my D4D at about 150 000 ks with Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75w90 API GL4. It is more expensive as it is a fully synthetic oil but it made a great difference to how smooth the gears shifted. I was actually sorry I did not replace it earlier. I replaced it because I started to hear a little whine/hiss on the gearbox. The sound disappeared immediately when I replaced the oil. It is now on 300 000ks. I am thinking I should replace it again now.

The old oil was not contaminated with water.

I need to add mine is a manual so that oil is obviously not correct for your bakkie.

Shortly after I bought my bakkie I had all the oils replaced. Insurance on my part for not knowing what the previous owner did (or not). Just replace it, you have nothing to lose.

On the TSA service item schedule for vehicles with A-series auto transmissions
like the one you have, it is stated that it must be "inspected"
every 40k Km by the TOY service centre.

Uhm...well...ja.. :siffler:

Nonetheless.
There is not a specific prescribed replacement schedule or interval for TOY ATF.
To which extend you utilize your vehicle has big influence to ATF life expectancy.
(Heavy towing, short runs, hard on the accellerator, up-down shifts, etc, etc)

Best advice I can give is to perform the atf inspection yourself.
You should have the 4-spd A340 series with dipstick. Takes TOY T-IV ATF.
Pull the dipstick at regular intervals and examine.
If you start to see discoloration, then have it replaced.

Good Luck.
I got arrested for driving naked. I guess I shouldn’t have put four wheels, an engine, and a steering wheel on my bathtub.
