Start by checking the earth at the tail lights / trailer plug and all the light connections under the rear end.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

When did this start happening? The wrong type of bulb can also wreak havoc with a vehicle's electricals. I've seen a single filament tail light bulb in the wtong socket cause headlights to go on high beam whenever the brakes were applied. So don't discount anything.
