HILUX TAILGATE

Post by Cory »

SWAMBO is the proud owner of a Hilux 4x4, the raised body, 2014 , VIN AHTDR22G05515634 (if that helps)
Came with a high canopy that doesn't fit garage, we we seldom need it, anyway.
I got a tailgate, but need the hinges (skarniere) the things at the bottom, I have the clips. Trouble is Toyota want R1700 for the hinges plus the supports that stop the tailgate banging down against the towbar

QUESTIONS
aNYBODY got any 'lying around'?
Somebody said Isuzu hinges may work. Or can I get a handyman to make up a set for me?
Why can I not use a length of chain to hold it up. Old school, like on our Datsun bakkie?

Advice appreciated

Welcome Cory!

There's nothing wrong with using chains or even 3mm steel cable to hold up the tailgate - you would just have to position the anchor points carefully so that they don't get snagged when closing the gate. Cable might be a better option in this regard.

Hinges - you're just going to have to try your luck, maybe someone here has, or a scapyard. Otherwise have some made. :winkx:
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

my first bet would also be the scrapyard... maybe they even throw in the cables. It would look and fit much better than chain retrofit

The canopy guys and places who do upgrades usually have these around, when customers upgrade to camping gear they leave the tail gates.
