Trailer indicators won't work

Post by Dee66 »

Afternoon All
I have a 2016 Hilux ive come across a problem with my boat trailer LED indicators !! stop, brake lights work fine but both indicators won't go everything was working fine last time I hooked up Ive checked everything and looks okay the truck it self works fine I did notice that when they were working 1 started flickering so I'm guessing something was starting to go ! now there are 2, 30amp box fuses behind the taillight could these have blown ? they must be part of the wiring harness.

Sounds like you have a faulty connection but check those fuses. The fact that the bakkie indicators still work means that the fault is either in the loom section that connects the trailer plug on the bakkie, the connector plug itself, the loom on the trailer or the lights on the trailer. The fact that they worked before means that there's no problem with them being LED type. The fact that the other trailer lights are working means that the earth connection to the trailer is good.

Very often the pins / sleeves in the trailer plugs become corroded, connect it and wiggle it about with the hazards on and see if the lights on the trailer respond.

If no luck there, start by opening the plug on the trailer - sometimes the wires can pull free from their connections, so check then all. If no loose connections, don't close it up just yet *.

Still no luck, check for 'juice' on the indicator pins in the socket on the vehicle with a multi-tester. If the juice is there plug in the trailer socket with the one side cover still open / removed * and test for 'juice' on the indicator pins from inside the socket on the trailer side.

If the 'juice' is there, test to see that it's getting through to the indicator lights on the trailer. If not, there's a break in the cable somewhere and more than likely its right at the plug where there is more flexing of the cable.

If there's juice getting to the indicator lamps on the trailer, then the fault is in the fitting itself or with the LED lamps. Check that the earth side of the fittings is continuous and check that the juice is getting to the lamp socket.

If that all checks out, there's either a bad connection between the lamp socket and the LED lamp or the LED lamp itself is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Good luck.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Trailer indicators won't work

From another group that seems to have the same issues,

https://www.facebook.com/groups/3619230 ... 514952398/

Note: All Ford Ranger & Mazda BT-50 owners

The lighting system of the Ford Ranger T6 & Mazda BT-50 was not made to drive LED’S on the trailer or caravan socket. Problem is the very low current of the LED’S (Less than 2w) and this will cause the trailer or caravan lights to flicker when in use.

We have a solution when using a trailer or caravan which has low power LED’S lights that require less than 2W. A trailer or caravan patch-harness this will overcome this issue.

Only R350.00 excluding courier cost.

It's not an LED compatibility problem Cobus. His LED indicator lights were working fine before. :winkx:
