Hi Guys,
Just thought I'd share my experience. It might help someone in the future.
I drive a 2010 Hilux 3.0 D4d.
On my way back from holiday I noticed a blue ball of smoke after filling up in Bloemfontein.
Didn't think much of it at the time but driving to Kimberley I realized that blue smoke is bad.
Anyway I suspected contaminated fuel as it happened right after I filled up and this is where 2 weeks of head scratching started.
I drained the tank and put 20 liters in. Same issue.
Dropped and cleaned the tank and fuel lines. Still smoking
I then took my bakkie to a diesel tech to do diagnostics. I suspected a blown injector seal but the guy assured me that this will not be the issue and he wanted to do injector tips even though they're all in range.....R15000 for the job.
I then took the bakkie to Toyota Kimberley and told them that I suspect injector seals on number 4 as the bakkie starts fine when parked facing down but smokes every time when parked level or uphill.
They assured me 99% that it's the turbo and this will cost R28500.
Apparently everything tested fine on the diagnostic including the compression test.
I then asked them to give me a quote to do the injector seals and was told that I'm going to waste my time and money.
So I took the bakkie and was charged R900 for this news. I then got a turbo from Bloemfontein for R7000 and replaced it myself along with the oil and all the filters but I noticed sludge on the valves on injector 4 when I took the intake manifold off.
Drove it for 2 days and still the same problem.....even more smoke
By now I had enough and couldn't find 1 mechanic who would check the seals. Five guys told me to do the injector tips.
I took it apart myself and sure enough there were no more seals on injector 4. I got the new aluminium seals for R160 (Toyota Kimberley charge R580 for the copper seals and Toyota Bloemfontein R280)
The whole job took me 4 hours and now the bakkie runs better than ever. No more smoke!!!
The only good thing is that I have a new turbo (unnecessary) and all the lines, tank, throttle body, injectors etc. are clean of carbon and dirt........so it will run better.
This whole thing cost me around R13000 and it could've been R160
I think I'll trust my own judgement if there are any future issues.

Good save there Henk.
Welcome to the forum.
Some dealers (read : stealers) will do anything to make some cash.
At least you had the savvy to sort it out yourself.
Imagine how some of these places rip off the people with little or no technical skills on a daily basis.

Re: Injector Seals
Eish... imagine you have injectors and turbo replaced by toyota or other garage and blue smoke still there.
Can one claim back the money spent on this type of trail and error repairs?
Especially from toyota who should know their product inside out.

Re: Injector Seals
I'm just wondering what could have happened to the old seal. Was there absolutely nothing of the seal left on the injector?
