3.0 Hilux Motor Stalling

Post by junglerider »

Hi, I have a 2008 Hilux 3.0 D4D automatic with about 140,000 km on it. When driving at low RPM's, like below 2000, the motor will sometimes just die. No power loss or stumbling just cutting off. Does not seem to be electrical since the power is not interrupted with the radio, lights or dash. I've had the injectors checked and cleaned, cleaned the EGR valve and the problem still exists and getting worse. Sometimes now it will do it even when I'm excellerating, and it can occasionally have a very short stumble or hesitation but does not die. If I drive it in 3rd gear, higher RPM's, it does not stall. Any ideas? Was not showing codes either.

With a diesel it can only really be the diesel supply but it is strange as you should be getting the diesel warning light if the pressure in the common rail drops. A dirty filter will also give you the diesel warning light. Possibly a faulty sensor somewhere but that should normally give you a fault code.

Yea, it's strange. The fuel tank was dropped and cleaned, new fuel filter, no warning lights or codes. Thanks for the input though.

If someone along the line over tightened the diesel filter housing after replacing the filter, the plastic crack and will get air into fuel system.

Had a D4D that would sometimes just die under hard acceleration, when overtaking etc.
After various fault findings it was the sensor on the common rail tube. It also did not throw any errors.

When it died, You just turn the key of and on and will start first shot again.

Pierre is onto something. The plastic diesel filter housing is the first thing I would look at. It has a non-return valve and if that is giving hassles you are bound to experience the type of symptoms you are currently getting.

PROBLEM SOLVED. Took it back to the diesel shop and it finally showed a code. A negative number on injector # 3 indicated a short in either the coil or cable. I unplugged the connectors to the injectors and computer and cleaned them with contact cleaner. Of course, the contact cleaner swelled up the little orange seals so I had to replace those. Plugged everything back in and no more issues. It's been about a month now and runs great. Thanks for everyones input and I hope this helps someone with the same issue.
