3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
Does anyone have any tips on replacing this?
I noticed slight oil leaking/ weeping 10 years ago when I bought my hilux now 200000km later the leak is getting worse.
Oil is getting on to the water pump/alternator drive belt(seems to make belts squeal very slightly on cold start), there is oil on the bash plate but oil level doesn't drop.
I see according to some US forums hardest part is getting to pulley bolt loose as well as re tightening it.
Some recommend air tools but then radiator has to be removed, others says there is a small hole in the flywheel which a 6mm allen key can be inserted.
Another tip was wedging a power/breaker bar against the chassis on passenger side(Drivers side on RHD) disconnecting coils or EFI and using the starter to get the bolt loose but on my bakkie the power steering pipes run there, also this doesn't solve the tightening issue.

Re: 3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
Best is to remove the radiator, just make everything so much easier.
The spanner on bolt and swing engine trick works great, but I prefer an impact wrench.
If you wanna do the spanner trick I will still remove the radiator because if the spanner flies the wrong direction you will be minus a radiator.
Is not a difficult job if you remove the radiator.
Just make sure you buy a real Toyota seal as spare shop seals will start leaking a month down the line.

Re: 3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
Fix now else it starts flying off the pulley and makes a big mess of the bay. Toyota OE seal, do it once. Check for ridge worn into wearing surface, possibly don't drive seal fully home to avoid ridge. Start with gearbox in gear and see if you can get it undone, twist quickly, then try wrapping strong rope around pulley tied to engine block and twist. If rope breaks go buy hex socket, 6 sides, and do the breaker bar motor spin method if you can, see if it will lodge somewhere else, use a pipe to extend if needed, tie bar into position. Then inspect pulley for any holes/spokes on front face and make a tool that will clamp to face of pulley with two 'prongs' (strong bolts) that protrude into pulley holes. Insert hex socket with bar. You now have two separate lever arms centered around crankshaft that will work against each other. Then radi out, hope you don't have to go that far.

The tool with the prongs that hook into the pulley works. Built a cheap one for myself. Never struggled since.... I don't even take the radiator out anymore.

I found this old thread:
http://hilux4x4.co.za/views/viewtopic.php?t=33842
would the tightening method not work for loosening as well?

Re: 3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
No reason why it shouldn't .... if the hand brake doesn't hold in 2nd gear then try 3rd gear ... 4th and 5th might put a bit too much strain on the box if the bolt is very, very tight. Otherwise get someone to apply the foot brake while you loosen the bolt.

Jaco, if you use Tapatalk just post the image and place the URL between the img_resize codes.
Otherwise you can send the pics to andy@hilux4x4.co.za and I'll resize for you.

Pleasure. You should try to measure your pulley and build according to those sizes.

Re: 3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
I finally got around to trying to do this job yesterday, but failed the power steering/AC pulley blocks the main pulley so the tool won't work.
Vehicle in gear and brakes on didn’t work.
So I put everything back.
was considering going to mechanic but found this:
https://www.ttora.com/forum/123394-post4.html
I think I will maybe try it again?

Re: 3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
Not so sure about the allen key - it's high tensile and brittle. If it snaps off / shatters inside it (or pieces) could fall into the clutch / pressure plate side of the flywheel - then you got problems. 6mm is also not very strong.
Something else I just think of is ghat sometimes those bolts are left hand threads, depending on which way the crank rotates when the motor is running - it will almost always want to tighten. Perhaps someone can shed a bit more light on this.
I would lock up the drive train in 3rd gear and with a good fitting socket wrench and strong-arm on the bolt, shock the arm with a hammer, 2 hits at a time in each direction. When it starts to move you will soon see if it's left or right thread.

4th and 5th gear in the box are not that strong (especially 5th), that's why I suggested 3rd - much less chance of doing any damage. If 3rd doesn't work, then maybe try 4th.
P.S. if the handbrake is not holding the vehicle while you do this, then get someone to sit inside and hold the foot brake.

Re: 3RZ Front crankshaft seal replacement?
Shock the bolt repeatedly as well with a hammer on the strong arm handle (rotational shock) - 2 hits left and 2 hits right while putting tension on the handle. (Don't hit the bolt itself ... that will transfer lateral shock into the crank .... not good.)
