Propshaft center bearing..
Hi all;
On Sunday the center bearing on the rear propshaft collapsed. This is worrying because I had the prop overhauled (500 km ago ) and a new center bearing was installed as well. Why would this happen? Maybe faulty "new" center bearing ? On Friday I loaded some sand for building use , but it was half a cubic metersand and the rear leaf spring was still 50mm away from the stoppers. Could loading have something to do with it ?
I am thinking what also could have happened is the prop is to long and with the loading of the bakkie it damaged ? Or maybe a balancing weight came loose on the prop?

Nope loading should not cause it. maybe inferior parts. Take it back if it was 500kms ago.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
Was the prop shaft properly balanced?
I agree with Benhur, sounds as if the centre bearing itself was not up to spec.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
Going to take it today. Also think the bearing itself was the culprit. Balancing felt okay .. could not pick up awkward vibrations while driving.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
A friend had the centre bearing replaced on his lux 3 or 4 times by a local propshaft company, then he switched to the OE item and never had problems again until he eventually sold the bakkie.
This is one of those parts where it's not always a good idea to use a pirate part. If it's an OE part, take it back.

Am I correct in saying that OE parts is a term used for genuine Toyota parts ?

Yes, it stands for "Original Equipment" - sometimes also referred to as 'O.E.M' - Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
Just got back from propshaft place. The center bearing angle was wrong.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
Was the bearing damaged at all? Did they replace it, or just reset the angle?

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
They whill replace as the bearing is gone, the rubber is gone only the housing is left. What happened is , I took the Lux to a place to overall the rear diff and asked them to send the propshafts for repair as well. The diff repair place does not overall p/shafts , they will only fit it back after diff was done. So they fit the center bearing incorrectly.
What I did is take the bakkie to the place who did the p/shaft and they picked up that the guys at the diff place stuffed up by fitting the center bearing incorrectly.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
I see, that makes sense. I couldn't understand how the bearing was incorrectly fitted in the first place, but now it makes sense. At no cost to you, I hope?

To say the least, the propshaft place would have overhauld the shaft, and sent it back in one piece. The bearing can then only be bolted on. I fail to see how the angle was wrong. One my SFA, it could onlt fit one way.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
iHilux I agree fully with your statement here,
Somethinmg sounds fishy here, some sort of cover up.
Because they have to balance the complete propshaft as one unit, however make sure that the slip joint has not been over greased, otherwise you will pick up an unbalance.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
The centerbearing has to hangerclips on top where you hang the whole thing on the crossmember were it bolts to. Just for ease of work to take the load off while you bolt it on. In stead of hanging the whole setup so the hanger clips are hooked on to the crossmember, they had it underneath the crossmember causing the centerbearing to have a downward angle towards the rear of the vechile.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
I sure am glad that I do have have to deal with a business like this, how doff can some people be
Then they could not have bolted it correctly in place, no common sense here.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
IMHO, how tight did they bolt the CB fast? If they had torqued the bots properly, the hangers would have just bent open, and it would have not affected the bearing angle in any way. Besides, if the hangers didn't hook over, you would be batteling your arse off to set the CB. You would have needed six pair of hands.......HiluxJunkie wrote:The centerbearing has to hangerclips on top where you hang the whole thing on the crossmember were it bolts to. Be that as it may, I hope you got it sorted, and all is in order now.

Re: Propshaft center bearing..
All sorted. The propshaft place (Mega Propshaft) replaced bearing and fitted propshaft all for free, which is very nice of them as it was not their fault. I can realy recommend them if you are in the Middelburg MP area.
