Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
Hi,
I would like to replace the center bearing of my 94` Hilux.
How do I go about to do it and do I need special tools to get the flange removed and inserted back again?
Please help!
Cheers

Never had to do it, so I would't know, but someone here will. Just give it a little time and check back later.

Yes you'll need a drift/bearing puller to remove the old bearing. Once you've disconnected the mating surfaces you can (mark before dis-assembly) you can either take the bearing and shaft to an engineering to pull off the old and fit the new or try it yourself.
There's a castle-ated nut to remove (like inside the front hubs) which needs careful handling if you are going to use the same nut again, best get a replacement from the Stealers.
Otherwise real straight forward, Stealer one is expensive, Gemini/Commercial Carrier Bearing (Complete Assembly) is cheaper and of adequate quality, around R250.
Take peekchaz Bru asblf

Re: Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
Thanks but I`ll rather dismantle the driveshaft and take it to a Eng. shop for replacement.
I`ve already bought the bearing from the Agent...ok Stealer, but only the casing and bearing thus the additional work to be done.
For some reason I believe to replace parts on the Hilux with the genuine (Stealer) thing due to the long distances we travel. Do not want a breakdown in mid Bot. you know :D

Re: Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
Hi Bees
Not sure if it is the same as the IFS's centre bearing, but I changed mine a week or two ago on an IFS DC and as someone said before remove the castle nut (IFS a locknut) and with a three legged wheelpuller pull it off after you marked it. Remember the two propshaft sections need to be on the same spline if you do not want to balance the shaft afterwards. Carefully push the new centre bearing in making sure the orientation is the same as it was with the old one. Fit and tighten the castle nut and fit a new split pin if there is space for one. If you find that it vibrates remove the hole shaft and take it to a propshaft repair shop so that they can balance it. This whole jobby shouldn't take longer than 1 hr.
Enjoy

Re: Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
Hi,
Did mine a few months ago. IIRC I didn't even need a bearing puller, the bearing slid right off. Needed a bench vice though to loosen the lock nut.Half hour job...

Re: Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
Be sure to mark the positions of everything you take apart, especially the slip-joint - one spline out and you will have vibration because the phasing will be out - (the "cup end" of each universal at either end of any section of shaft must be oriented at 90° of each other). Even with the ends at 90°, you can still be 180° out of the original balancing position, so mark it well.

Re: Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
I changed mine last week, but before I marked the corresponding spline, in my hast, I gave it a healthy tap with my resin hammer and it shot off hitting me in the face, so I not only have a chipped front tooth but a vibrating propshaft!Mud Dog wrote:Be sure to mark the positions of everything you take apart, especially the slip-joint - one spline out and you will have vibration because the phasing will be out - (the "cup end" of each universal at either end of any section of shaft must be oriented at 90° of each other). Re: Replacement of Center Carrier Bearing
Eish! Can't help you much with the chipped tooth ..... resin or gold filling are the only options I can think of.
As for the prop vibration, well if it wasn't vibrating before, then it's probably out of phase or 180° out from the original position. Also check that the centre bearing is properly aligned (propshaft must be in a straight line in the vertical plane).
