Rotating the SFA for use in Nissan conversion
Manne and Maninne:
The American Nissan IFS guys do a Solid Front Axle conversion in several ways, among these are:
1) Use a Jeep axle with LHS pinion and the standard Nissan transfer case
2) Rotate a Hilux SFA front diff so that the pinion is on the LHS
Now I have read a partial article where such a Lux SFA is rotated:
1. Cut off diff cover. Its pretty thin, apparently takes 5 minutes with a 115mm grinder.
2. notch the third member flange in the housing for the ring gear. The third member drops in without any notching, but maybe notch for safety
3. 4 studs, 2 at the top and 2 at bottom of the third flange need to be relocated. Remove the studs, weld up the holes and grind flush.
4. Install third upside down on the six remaining studs. use a transfer punch to mark the center. Remove the third and drill/tap the new stud locations.
5. After that just spin the balls/swivels ~180 (lloking for a write-up)
6. Then swap the knuckes side to side, and weld the cover back on(or a pipe cap)
Please don't flame me or anything for this process, I unashamedly stole it. But I need somebody to confirm if this is possible.
Lastly: is a 4.1:1 (or round about that number) ratio available for these diffs? If so, approximate cost?

Philip, what are you doing on a South African Hilux forum?
So you can confirm the method? Any links to photos? I'm struggling to picture the process......

By the way, most 4-banger SFA Hiluxes in SA run 4.88:1 ratios. We didn't get the 6-cylinder engines over here.

Jeez, that's far from our patch of earth.

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Thanks Philip, that's where I got the process that I posted.
Sounds like a lot of trouble for a 55" axle? The Nissan axles are 59" at least.

Re: Rotating the SFA for use in Nissan conversion
I'd rather use a Jeep axle and avoid all the expense.
Over here, the dealer spares people aren't called "stealers" for nothing.......
