How to switch to different Coordinate types
There are several formats for writing degrees, all of them appearing in the same Lat, Long order.
* DMS Degrees:Minutes:Seconds (49°30'00"N, 123°30'00"W)
* DM Degrees:Decimal Minutes (49°30.0', -123°30.0'), (49d30.0m,-123d30.0')
* DD Decimal Degrees (49.5000°,-123.5000°), generally with 4-6 decimal numbers.
Scenario: Some one give you coordinates to a place you need to be and it is:
25°54' 25.61" S
27°19' 33.92" E
Woohoo... now you've got the coordinates but your GPS only accepts the coordinates as Decimal Degrees
So how do you change this into the correct format? Easy.
Take the coordinates and brake it apart into its different parts:
25°54' 25.61" S
25° (degrees)
54' (minutes)
25.61" (seconds)
Now start at the seconds and divide the value by 60:
25.61 / 60 = 0.426833
Now add the minutes and devide by 60 again:
(0.426833 + 54) / 60 = 0.907113
Now add the degrees to the total and you have Decimal degrees:
0.907113 + 25 = 25.907113° S
Do the same for the longitude:
27°19' 33.92" E
33.92 / 60 = 0.565333
(0.565333 + 19) / 60 = 0.326088
(0.326088 + 27 = 27.326088°E
And there you have it:
25°54' 25.61" S = 25.907113°S
27°19' 33.92" E = 27.326088°E
IF your GPS receiver only accepts 4 digits do not round the digits. Just use the first 4 digits after the decimal point. (ex. 27.326088°E = 27.3260°E)
To get from decimal degrees to degrees, minutes,seconds you just do the reversal of the above processes multiplying with 60 each time.
If you need to go from DMS to DM you only perform the first step. In the above example it would be:
25°54' 25.61" S = 25° + 54 + (25.61 / 60) = 25°54.426833'S
27°19' 33.92" E = 27° + 19 + (33.92 / 60) = 27°19.565333'E
Hope someone can use this. Some GPS receivers have the option of changing the input type and you just enter it in accordingly.

Dit is nou 'n toeval! Was gister besig om vir 'n client die verskil teverduidelik!
Nou gaan hulle dit dalk makliker verstaan.
(Ek verduidelik nes my wiskunde onderwyser. Almal sê net hu? as ek klaar is)
Dankie Cassie!
