homemade genset with Toy 3C-T

Hi All,

want to put in a genny on my plot and get rid of ESKOM (go off-grid)

I refuse to pay R30 000+ for a 3 phase 37,5KVA generator and was thinking of building my own.

Generator engine service kits are also insanly priced! I can service a 3C for R500! and a 'new' import engine is only about R3800.

I can get a quality 37,5KVA alternator with built in AVR for R6500
was thinking of running it from a Toyota 3C-T
The alternator must run at 1500RPM and the 3C torque peak is 2400RPM so would use a 2 belt step down pulley system and run the Toy engine at 2400RPM and the alt at 1500RPM

has anyone done something like this and offer any advise

I have seen this a few times on the construction sites.

The concrete flooring guys seem to use these kind of set ups alot as the work where there's no power and also all hours.

Biggest thing would be cooling the motor and controlling the rpm's when the load is adjusted I guess. My genie seems to use a centrifugal system that works the carb to increase decrease the rpm as load is applied and removed.

Getting the hole thing set up sound reasonable enough. Would the running and maintenance costs warrant such a change though...???

its not just the cost, its the reliability and the self-suficiency factor too.

The genset will be for supplemental power as I will use a battery bank and solar panels (PV) as well

Hey Zane - no worries, I take ALL criticism as constructive

Thats a very good point you make about rev compensation though.
I am hoping that the 74kw available in the 3C and the 240Nm of torque will handle the loads with out dropping too much.

for example set the engine at 2600 or so unloaded and then it will drop to between 2200 -2400 which is in the ideal range (torue peak) of the 3C.

I would use the usual viscous fan and hilux radiator for cooling
