Conversion help Hilux 2.4 petrol to 3lt diesel

Post by Bugsy »

It would be most appreciated if anyone could help.
I have a '95 Toyota 2.4 petrol 4x4 Hilux Raider with 150lt long range tank - very bad consumption +-700km per tank - also very sluggish "goes nowhere very slowly". Wanting to do a long trip with a group to Kenya. Don't want to sell trusty old 4x4 as fitted with rooftop tent, alucab, water tank, sliding drawer system. Looking to replace engine with a KZ-TE 3lt diesel - am I on the right track? Do I have any major problems going forward with this conversion? Hoping to use same 2.4 gearbox and diff.
Read some reports on your forum that the 99-2000 KZ-TE model had overheating problems. Thought of a Lexus but was told comsumption still not good.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for prompt response. Was hoping to stay with Toyota due to vast numbers on the road for spares should they be needed. First time I've used this site so will see if I can successfully contact Hoppy.
Thanks again.

I also wanted to do a KZ conversion back in the days, but the motor and conversion is quite expensive. The 2.5 is apparently much easier cost effective replacement.
i ended up selling my 2.2 and bought a 2.7.Mine was also well kitted and I actually regret selling the SFA.

Then there is also the option of installing a EFI system on the 2.4.Lots of info on the forum

There is a whole lot more money and work involved in a conversion from petrol to diesel as the diffs will almost certainly need to be changed as well as diesel diffs are much stronger than petrol. Only down side but I stand to be corrected.

Welcome Evan,

Remember the KZ has an electronic fuel pump. You will either need to get the ECU and keys, etc. from a Kz or a mechanical pump.

He Kz does not rev as easy as the 2.5 Ford, neither is it as economical. Spares-wise the Ford is way cheaper to maintain than a Kz.

Should I need to make that choice, the Ford would win first prize!

Damn, that is horrible consumption, my 2.4 got around 500km on a 65l tank... Have your carb overhauled, that should make a big difference

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply to my dilema. On advice I phoned Allan (Hoppy) today and he suggested I merely stick with what I have as it is a reliable "workhorse" and to just go with a 4Y carb - but not a Japanese one. Another person suggested having my existing carb overhauled.

A 4Y is so scarce so will do the carb overhaul first - if anyone has a contact to buy a 4Y please let me know.

Many thanks to all
