Tow bar???

Post by cprinsloo »

Hi all,

I've made a tow bar that came in handy a few times already. It's always bolted to the side-step, but still out of the way. Easy and cheap to manufacture. I bought the trailer attachment (hook? cup?) for about R130, and used a 1.5 m (32 x 32 x 2 mm) piece of square tubing with a 12 mm round bar bent into a loop welded to one end.

During July 2007 I lent it to some guys to recover a hugely expensive 4x4 in Mamili, which is Namibia's version of the Okavango swamps. The guy told me later that without the bar they wouldn't have been able to do the recovery.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Great idea! Many times one overlooks the simple way of doing things.

And I am sure that there must be other uses available for it as well?

You could use it for winching if you are alone and stuck somewhere out of the way and you have a winch and nowhere to connect the cable to, out comes the spare wheel, spade and pick........... bury this bar close to the sparewheel so that you can attache a rated chainlink through the centre of the wheel rim (if your wheel rim is alloy do not use it).

You could also wedge it between some rocks as a winch point.

think of some other ideas as well, I am off to http://www.now.org.za

cheers

Doen een ding elke dag wat jou bangmaak. Dit voorkom dat jy vinnig oud word. As jy oud word sal jy baie stories vir jou kleinkinders kan vertel.
