Hi all clever ones
Can the flat bar with the hole which is welded onto the standard Toyota fitted towbar, be used as a recovery point? The vehicle is a 2009 Hilux Raider.

There are THREE types of "ropes":
1) tow rope - any old point will do the job, well just about.
2) "light recovery" - your car is beached on a sand heap and two guys could push it of the mound type of recovery. very little force is involved here and people take chances ....
3) SNATCH recovery - the vehicle is sunken into mud and only an almighty tug with a snatch rope gets it to move. Now you are talking MAJOR forces !! When things go wrong here it goes BAD, very quickly !

Clearly a lot happens somewhere between 2 and 3 .... and often people think it will be a light tug and it turns into a major event, without the proper safety in place.

So what is the "ideal" situation?
- the rope is connected "in line" with the chassis member of your vehicle. This way the full force is taken by the chassis DIRECTLY, not via some bending or twisting moment. The towpoint you refer to is below the chassis line and thus the bolts holding the towbar in place experience a turning moment - for which it was NOT designed. If it breaks the towbar becomes a flying mass ... mostly the bolts holding the towbal (flat plate in your cas) in place is NOT high tensile either, as it should be for a high powered recovery.


If I was stuck, I would not let you use a snatch strap to recover me - using that mounting point. If the thing breaks off MY vehicle will sustain damage. Fact is last weekend another "incident" occured outside Botriver - the rope broke and cause damage to the towing vehicle (just a faulty rope, and no bridal strap). Apparently they are talking 5k damage, but fortunately nobody got hurt (true figure will only be known later though)

A friend of mine had the other vehicles towball through his car window.

I'd stick to recovering Micro Machines and Hotwheels with that.

Rather be safe than sorry... fit proper recovery points (yes 2), with the correct rated hardware. In a case of emergency you could use that hook as a light duty recovery point, but never for a KINETIC (snatch) recovery.

The fact is we venture out into places where we need to be recovered, and if we dont have proper recovery points, we put other people's lives and equipment in danger, while we expect them to help us out of our predicament. The whole "I dont get stuck so I dont need recovery points" attitude is just wrong and selfish.

My friends Toyota's towbar, like yours was bended and almost torn off there after a snatch incident. I was not here but he says the sound that it made was not good.

So like the people says above NO Snatch Recovery. Just pulling another car on tar for that one.
