What to pack?

Post by Umpalumpa »

Well, this obviously being the right place to ask.
As so many of you have done overland trips in Africa, I am sure there are some seasoned travelers here.
Do any of you have a "Checklist" of some sorts for your trips? :beg:
This would include spares, fuel, documents etc to make your trip a success.
As a newcomer to this field I will definitely be planning a few trips but if I could get some help or guidance on this matter it will help me tremendously.
Thanks thus far...

If you do the advanced 4x4 course(bootcamp), you get all the lists in a handbook and a lot more usefull info for free, ask Thys DJ if there will be one in Gauteng soon
Somewhere last year WEGRY had an usefull article on packing lists and tools

Thanks Hoppy. I have been booked on a course at Safari (was a gift) on the 13th April in PTA.
Will see if they have something like that. Doubt it.
I am a bit of an OCD candidate :silent:, even my toilet paper consumption goes on a spreadsheet.....
Hoping to get a sheet like that from some members, but will also see what is on offer from my training.

Hi Jacques

I believe that every person has different needs.. so one persons list will not always suit another persons needs.. but there is a few basic things you can pack my list is as follows:
Meat,Fire wood, blits, booze,Tab (mix),Smokes,Glass,Portable braai, toilet paper The rest can stay home....

here is the basics i pack:

1. Tent,matras,sleeping bag,pillow
2. pre marked Maps (just incase the gps bombs out) and Gps
3. Medical aid kit ( I use a basic 4x4 med kit that i added some stuff to like sting-go's, and some antihistamin (hope i spelled ---that right) tablets, and anti goga ( tabart or pieceful sleep works best)
4. Toiletpaper
5. Spade
6. clothes and toiletries( but not much mostly basics like: clean undies, long jarmy pants, shorts and a few t shirts maybe a ---jacket and a good pair of hiking boots)
7. Chairs
8. foldup table
9. cutlery (1x melinine set = 4x plates,cups,bowls,knives,forks,spoons ens.) tongs, braaigrid
10. food ie: 2minute noodles, meat, frozen mix veg,and some hardy fresh veg like patatoes or sweet patatoes also found that ---werda pre made salads works wel and some premix potbread or dumpling mix u buy at outdoor warehouse
11. fridge and gasstove
12. torches ( yes more than 1 cause sometimes i misplace them)
13. Drinking water (i have an 50l plastic tank that i use)
14. sweetstuff (this includes some mix a drink for the kids, some droewors or biltong ens.)
15. feul ( i take my km/l and calculate the distance i need to travel between feulstops to work out how much feul i need to ---carry extra
16. Gasbottle
17. wood ( i normally only buy this at the last town i get before im "in the bush")
18. Black Bags
Spares wise:

1. fanbelt
2. Q20 and silicone spray
3. cable ties (big and medium sizes)
4. heavy duty ducktape
5. hoseclamps (varios sizes)
6. piece of offcut radiator hose and feul line
7. 5l bottle of enjin oil
8. varios sizes bolt n nuts
9. spare fuses
10. tools ( multi select screwdriver, socket set, a few relavently sized spanners)

Recovery wise

1. spare wheel or 2
2. good tyre repair kit
3. tyre pump
4. high lift jack
5. snatch and/or kinetic rope
6. 4x shackles
7. gloves

As for border crossing and documents.. that all depends on where you want to go, but the basics are:

1. valid passport ( some counties your passport must still be valid for 6 mnths after your return date)
2. certified copy of your cars registration ( and a letter from your bank giving you permision to take the car outside of SA if your car is financed)
3. proof of insurance for outside SA borders
4. you have to pay road taxes at the border of the country you go to
5. you have to have a ZA sticker on your car, and depending on their laws refecters aswel (just buy a whole lot here and drag it with, as they will sell you sum but at rediculles prices

there is more, but i cant think of it now
Hope this helps

Unbelievable!!!! Thank you so so very much. Off course each one packs for himself, but the basics and the know how of the experienced guys on here really makes this forum worthwhile!
I could buy the world if I had to go to the specialists shops, but then again 90% off the "stuff" they sell you would hardly need.
Dankie baie/Thank you/ Ke a le boga!!

Jacques the reality is that the "list" is the SAME as when you go camping ... well almost.

Extra spare / tire repair kit is handy on long trips

as for the rest - the real planning starts when you wont be near any shops for days on end.

I did make an extensive list of the items in our 4x4 though. PAIN when you need something and dont know where it is ....

There is allot of things to pack and you will only use half of it.BUT one thing i will pack on my next trip is a electric kettle and electric one stove plate when I do my trip again. It may sound strange but 60% of our campsites in Africa had electricity and you sometimes struggle to find firewood and gas re-fills.
o yes and one of our best investments was a little 12volt fan that you use in your tent. I camped with people with camper cruiser with all the bells and whistles and all where very jealous about the fan.
