Chairman's Challenge 2013
So this is a trip report of a different nature.
Every year the Scouts all over SA have what they call their Kon Tiki weekend. They get to spend the weekend on their rafts which they pioneer themselves. The top teams then get invited later in the year to compete in the "Chairman's Challenge".This year 9th Benoni made it into the challenge.
The challenge changes from year to year, and you are only drip fed info.At first we where told to build for speed and light weight,With only a crew of 6 - 8 scouts.
It was only announced a week before where it would be held and on the event day were we given all the final details.
It was held on the Vaal river and there was 17km to be covered within the set time limit. We would arrive at the start point at 7am and then build and have rafts inspected by 9am,just in time for the start. Our crew of six starting the build.
Part of the rules for the comp is that the following has to be on the raft with them:
1. Complete first aid kit
2. 3L water per person
3. Lunch pack
4. Floatation devices,one per person
5. Extra ropes.
6. STA box(spare time activities)
After two hours hard labour and with only 7 minutes to spare we where given the sea worthy thumbsup. All the rafts were then sent out onto the river to line up for the start. Once they were off,the Scouters and parents packed up and headed off to the fin line,(also our base camp)
There was two points along the route which was cut off points. But to our concern we relized the kids were paddleling into a strong head wind.

Re: Chairman's Challenge 2013
To cut a long story short,by 3pm not one raft was in view, the judges made a judment call and decided we will have to pull all rafts and crew at the 11km mark.By 3:30pm we saw the first raft.
The rafts at this stage where a worse for wear,as they had to navigate over two sets of rapids.
Finally our crew arrived at 6:30pm,full of smiles and team spirit, they even joined up with another crew to form one raft. We broke down the raft at that point and headed back to base camp.Fed the kids and by 9pm you could hear a penny drop in the campsite
The following morning it was pack up time and have closing parade at which the winners was announced.
The leading team had pulled a 1.5km lead over 2nd place and a futher 4km over 3rd.The rafts at this stage where a worse for wear,as they had to navigate over two sets of rapids.

Reminds me of my younger years as well! (And I'm just a fraction older than Francisco! )
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!
