New Merc GWagon

Post by Donkey »

Got to take this beast to Serendipity these past two days. 3.0 ltr V6 diesel motor with turbo, Euro 4 spec (50 ppm diesel), but was told we will be getting a Euro 3 spec which can take 500 ppm fuel. 35" Arctic Truck Conversion. No bells no whistles, only thing that kinda whistles is the when you hear the turbo kicking in through the snorkel, which is on the driver side. This is a truck that is built solid. And it's very capable with rear and front lockers, though I found it pretty thirsty for a three litre. Space is ample and seats comfortable for overlanding. Conversion includes an off-road front/rear bumper with hi-lift and recovery points. What I didn't like was the mirrors were flapping in the wind as I drove, you have to be a gym freak to close the doors properly. I kinda understand the doors being so hard cos it's military spec, but they could have done better for a vehicle that costs R1.3m with the mirrors. Oh no immobiliser either, just central locking via the key.

Will post pikchas soon as I get a chance,

Oh before I forget, it comes in auto with a torque converter, what that means is that over some obstacles it screams while the system is trying to figure itself out, before moving off. I didn't like the BF tyres fitted, found them very slippery over rocks though they were 1.6 bar

Thanks Tumelo. The GW's have always been seriously capable vehicles and that without sacrificing too much ride comfort. Despite the prestigious brand, the 'no frills' models of the past were still reasonably affordable (except for parts and maintenance), but at 1.2 mil I would imagine that most interested buyers will be having 2nd thoughts. :eh:

I understand.
@Thabo - nope, nothing. But interestingly enough they have drain plugs on either front footwells to drain water, should the vehicle be drowned, I'm sure Oom Cass would love this feature :mocking:

@ Noel, have you not done Serendipity before? Course was dry, with some rocky inclines, the little stream that runs through the farm wasn't deep either. Facilities are clean and well kept, we used the Villa, feet felt the soft blankie and got warm really quickly. That plus exhaustion, plus mothers milk, plus a lekka camp fire warmth was enough to put me out about nine hours. The shoots are long and repetitive, having to drive obstacles over and over again for different angles, sometimes in reverse cos space doesn't always allow for a U turn.

Costs R3m basic unit, built on Iveco chassis, weighs about 8 tons, front/centre/rear diff-locks, auto box. Wheel comes to my chest height, not that I'm a tall outjie either, but still. Episode 7.

Any pics yet of this vehcile... Just one? :dance1:

What they've done with the Iveco 4x4's in the past have been amazing... Would just love one in later life as a retirement home!

Ian and I popped into travelstar when driving past Knysna in May and checked out all their huge overlanders they are busy with at the moment. Some monster trucks of note! Very costly but oh so stunning!
