Orange river allmost kills Hilux
We went to Lesotho via Ramatsheliso's gate near Matatiele form 11 February 2009 to 14 February 2009. The plan was to get to Katse dam as soon as possible to have 3 full days of fishing. Due to heavy rains in the area, we never made it to Katse, but had some fun trying to get there.
On Wednesday 11-2-09 our plans changed a bit when we got to the Orange river that we were supposed to cross and found this Hilux washed off the bridge, he made it about 3/4 of the way on the bridge and then the river took it!

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
Well done on saving a fellow Hilux owner's vehicle!!! Indeed it looks like it was very interesting to get there and like a lot of fun!!!
I am just wondering when will people learn not to cross a river that is coming down.

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
The driver was very happy to see us. The bakkie had allready been in the water for a few hours tied to one of the big rocks with a chain. The next morning you couldn't see any part of the bridge sticking out, it was totally under water. If i didn't rescue him that afternoon, the bakkie would definetely have been taken by the river and totally messed up.

Wel Hilux is n beter swemmer as n Izoesi. Hy het darm 3/4 gekom waar Izoesi nie eers 1/2pad deur die spruit kon kom nie.

Ok, nou's ek vrek nuskierig. Mag dalk 'n dom vraag wees maar wat is dit wat jy moet doen as jy so iets oorkom? Nognie te lank in die 4x4 bedryf nie, maar is gretig om te leer by die pro's.

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
in a situation like this it's vey possible that the motor has sucked in water. One would need to remove the plugs and spin the motor over to dispell the water from the cylinders. Trying to turn it over without removing the plugs would cause major damage, (snapped / bent con-rods, broken pistons, cracked heads or twisted / snapped crank). Also advisable to check for water in the sump. It would settle to the bottom (where the oil pump pick-up would be and you would be trying to lubricate bearings with water ). Loosen the sump plug and let a little oil drain out into a dish or something. If there's water in the sump it will drain. You would not neccesarily pick this up by examining the dipstick.
Dry out the distributor and rotor cap.
After that you should be ready to go again. :D

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
I have water drowned my hilux, at a very wet TakBok... fortunately didn't break anything serious, cracked exhaust manifold and bruised ego... on our last Hessequas adventure a Jeep Grand Cherokee sucked water into the engine... water in the oil and a strange tick tick noise after we got her back under running(with new oil)... they drove her 200km+ back to Cape Town and then investigated the noise, one of the conrod was bent in the shape of a C, amazing that it didn't knock a hole in the block or break down!

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
Usually the clearance of the conrod at the cylinder shoulders is only milimeters .... that is amazing. I would have imagined at the very least the motor would have misfired or run very rough.
Kobus, with a snorkel one could get away with a deeper water level than without.
I was thinking about diesels sucking in water .... the procedure would be the same exept it would be the glowplugs to be removed before swinging the motor over, (no spark plugs) and of course there is no 'dizzy'.

Same water hole we drowned that Jeep, we drowned a Mazda 2.5 TD as well, towed it back to the camp, cleared the cylinders, saw first hand that a diesel has much higher compression, the water shot out the cylinders when we cranked the engine, had the dry some of the electrics, detach the intercooler drained the water, and with a bit effort she started...

Well done and a very intersting read Go Hilux go
What gets my blood boiling is people who seem never moved when others are in trouble, and yet they would expect help when in need. Went to a park Wednesday afternoon looking for mud, on arrival a guy was stuck on a wet patch of grass with little mud, him and the lady friend were trying to push the car out - obviously with no luck. Right next to him is another oke in a D/C Isuzu with his chick, not bothered. And where he was standing he could have helped if he wanted to.
Pulled the oke out and what a feeling to help someone, but ya anne mense se kinders

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
No such thing as a stupid question here Theo.
If you have a snorkel and the system is well sealed you should have no problems, but if you stall the motor for more than a minute or two while it is submerged, the possibility always exists that water has got into the motor through the air intake system, the dipstick or breather pipes. Two main possible scenarios here .... Water in the sump and water in the cylinders.
Water in the sump would settle to the bottom since it's heavier than oil (oil floats on water), so if you get your motor running, the oil pick-up in the sump could be sucking water, not oil. The bearings in the motor would subsequently suffer damage without proper lubrication. To check this one only needs to loosen the sump plug a little until it starts to seep / dribble .... if oil comes out immediately all is well and the plug can be re-tightened. If water comes out, let it dribble until oil comes out and tighten the plug ... this will be good enough to get you home or if you are on a trip, to a place where you can replace the motor oil. You wouldn't get all the water out and the little that remains behind doesn't pose an immediate threat, buy it will emulsify with the oil, contaminating it .... leaving it in the motor for a long period will cause rust / corrosion, especially if the vehicle is allowed to stand unused for a time.
Water in the cylinders is the first immediate problem. Water does not compress like air and when a piston comes up on the compression stroke against the water, there is nowhere for the water to go (hydraulic lock), and something has to 'give'. It could be the connecting rod that bends or snaps or the piston itself that collapses. In either case there is the possibility of further damage IRO the head gasket or twisting the crankshaft.
To check / rectify this, one would first remove the spark plugs (petrol models) or glow-plugs (diesel models) and then turn the motor over, preferably by hand, (otherwise with small increments using the starter) for at least 2 full revolutions of the crankshaft. Thereafter you can let the starter spin the motor for a few seconds. This will dispel all the water in the cylinders safely without risk of damage. Replace the plugs.
Open the air filter to check for water and dry out the element as best you can (a small amount of water is no problem), dry out the distributor if it got water in and fire up. Allow it to run at low revs or idle for a minute or two before setting off.

Re: Orange river allmost kills Hilux
Voorkoming is beter as genesing. As jy voor 'n spruit/rivier kom, STOP !! As dit styg, moenie waag nie. Al het jy 'n 4x4 en die water is hoër as jou kniee, moet dit nie met jou voertuig waag nie. As jy b.g doen, sal jy nooit jou voertuig versuip nie.

Not to forget through the exhaust tailpipe as well, if the engine has stalled.but if you stall the motor for more than a minute or two while it is submerged, the possibility always exists that water has got into the motor through the air intake system, the dipstick or breather pipes.

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!
