SFA inner door panels

Hi everybody

The inner door panels on my SFA D/C is totally shot. The only way it still remains in place is with the pull handles and window winder handles.
I've been toying around with some ideas to totally redo them for a while now and would like to hear what others have done before I make up my mind.

So, if any of you had some great ideas, please tell us and post some pics please?

The one idea that I think I'll be going with is to redo them in hardboard and then stonechip them in grey as I'm busy redoing my floor like that (old PVC mat is in pieces). That way, the floor and door panels will look the same.

Somewhere I've seen someone used aluminium checkered plate for door panels.

Personally I would keep it original and take the existing ones or borrow one in a good condition make a copy onto new hardboard(thicker) and re upholster the doors with the same colour/material as the original.
If you want to make it stronger use thinner hardboard together with sheetmetal.
I have seen one and it works like a charm.

But thats just me, I like to keep things original

If you use thicker board, the clips doesn't work - If tried it.

On my departed SFA I totally redid the interior including the door panels, used the old shot ones as templates, cut new hard board, drilled the holes, upholstered and fitted with new clips... I coated the hardboard with waterproofing layer of paint as well!

But it sounds like you after something a bit new hardcore?

Where did you get the new clips?

There was a place in pretoria in pretorius street that sold boy pannels, aftermarket bumpers scoops etc.
I got longer clips there.
I wanted to buy some window rubber there the other day only to find it's a tavern now.
oh how old pretoria have changed..........

The checker aluminum plate was (still is) my second option. What made me look at other options though, was the fact that the missus complained about it chafing her knee after driving in a friend's - and I've GOT to keep her happy as well.

I am also looking for something a bit more hard-wearing than the same-old, same-old. So, I thought about it and as I am about to tear out the old PVC floor covering (which looks terrible) and redoing the floor with Durabak and Stonechip, I thought about spraying the door panels with the stonechip as well.
That way, the door panels and floor (and the center console in progress) would all look the same whilst at the same time the have a waterproof, hard-wearing surface finish.

I bought the old D/C with a horrible interior, so there isn't much left of the original - hence no need to try and retain the original look and feel.
I have also thrown out the back seat and am busy designing a storage system that will handle at the minimum a fridge and a few drawers for the permanent entourage.

6mm is way overkill .... 3mm is more than ample.

Oops, my bad .... didn't notice the . (point) ..... yeah, agree .... 3mm is also overkill, but the 0.6mm sounds a little light. Then again it's supported from behind and it doesn't take any stress.

I like the alu (plain or chequer) from the point of view of easy cleaning, but the upholstered panels look and 'feel' so much warmer. Particularly if it's a well cared for and neat van, but if it's a 'rough & ready' machine then I'd go with alu. Just my opinion.

Easy enough to make new panels from normal Masonite using the old form as a sample. Did this for Hot Dog when I had him resprayed at the time. I'm not fond of the ali panels, cold & impersonal.

Personally, I like all the ideas and photos you guys placed. Each has got its pro's and con's and as you said, its a matter of taste (and for me practicality).

Well, I stripped the old D/C this weekend (door panels, seats and floor) and got some bad news with it. The floor and firewall is rusted much worse than I thought, plus, both the two left hand door window regulators need to be replaced. So now I need to strip the dash out as well and then I need to clean the rust so I can see what needs to be done. I've got a friend who does panel beating and he said he will help me to cut out and replace some of the parts that need it. Then it is Rust Buster and Stone Chip (grey), together with a center console and the door panels.

I also cut out the panels' basic shapes yesterday. And there I ran into another snag. If I use the hardboard without covering it, how do I conceal the panel clip slots? Black Sam, you've used the allu plate. How did you fix the clips in position?

OK, so after lots of contemplation I have decided to take a another look at my ideas. As my seats are shot and I want them reupholstered in canvas (plus I've got canvas seat covers), and as the roof lining also need to be redone (discontinued at the stealers), I think I'll be redoing both the roof lining and the door panels in the same canvas. But I think I will still give the panels just a thin coat of stonechip both sides for water proofing and extra strength.

I think I will also open a new thread and post pics of the overall progress.

Here is what I did. Used hardboard, add a few layers of stonechip and then covered with rip stop canvas matching the seats. Some straps for handles.

You can get the clips from most auto spares places, I got mine from Sonday's Motor Spares in Stellenbosch. Auto trimmers will have them too. What I have contemplated doing is getting thin alu sheet cut to size, and fixing it to the doors with Torx head self tappers in the existing holes, should look nice and neat
