IFS Rock sliders and steppies.

Post by GeorgeJvR »

Well seeing that my previous DIY item was in Wegry, i wanted to give the other magazine chance, unfortunately i don't hear any thing from them ...
Gerrie let me know if you want this...

Seeing that I could not find a decent rock slider to fit my needs I decided to build my own, as I needed the slider and a stepping plate for the shortys.

After I did my research I took to the drawing bord

Welding the sliders to the chassis, did not fancy me that much. Therefore this design was best for me.

The rear of the slider I used some existing mountings

On the driver side you have the Brake lines running next to the chassis rail, remove one or two clips holding the pipes and use it to space the pipes from the chassis.

At the fuel tank you need to inspect where the brake pipes goes and place you mounting in such a position to just clear all.

Next I cut the square tubing to the correct length, and used these supports to get the level and placing , in order for me to start with the mountings

Remember to disconnect your battery when welding on a vehicle.

Next was the round tubing and 90 degree bends, and a test fit.

Once every thing was tag welded in place, I Welded it solid, test fitted it again and then it was of to the painters.

Next was the checkered plate, I had it cut and galvanized, unfortunately I did not like the color so I had it painted in an alu color paint.

What materials did I use;

50mm Square tubing 3mm 6M R365

48mm round tubing 2mm 6M R161

48mm 90 degree weld-on bends x4 R40.00

60mm flat bar 8mm 6M R246

M8 HT bolts and nuts R40

For the stepping plate I could not get off cut 4mm alu plate, there for used a mild steel checkered plate, I bought an off cut piece for R120.00

Galvanizing and cut for the stepping plate R350.00

Painting R450.00

Looks good George but just a quick question. That flat bar you used to bolt do the sliders to the chassis, wont it bend? Why did you not go with rectangular tubing?

George
