1988 Hilux Rebirth - Final
Morning All,
Finally I got her back. Busy running the motor in and have done about 400 kilometres. Cecil did a fantastic job with the motor. I can really recommend him. He is in Dunotter and will give you fantastic service ata very reasonable price. 082 923 1864. Just mention that you got his number from me on the forum.
Total cost breakdown was summarized:
1. Bodywork and paint - R 12 000.00.
2. Brakes, engine rebuild (incl 10 000 km warranty) and fitment of gearbox etc - R 21 000.00.
3. Gearbox rebuild incl 20 000 km warranty - R 4 500.00.
4. Interior seats recovering, gearbox boot, exterior lights and other trim and fittings - R 12 000.00.
5. New Tyres - R 4 200.00
6. Electrical and wiring - R 2 000.00.
7. Other odds and ends and people taking advantage - R 5 000.00.
In summary for R 60 000.00 I built a bakkie that is mechanically reliable as it was done ground-up.
As you all know the Lux is not a Cruiser od note, but she has a charm that is exactly what I wanted. It is a unique driving experience - no gimmicks or luxury and extremely capable.
Furthermore the sentimental value is there of having taken something that was "dead" for 17 years and bring it back to life.
All the buddies that said she could not be fixed now appreciate her and dare I say I detect a bit of jealousy!!
It was a very enjoyable, although sometimes frustrating project, but definitely worth it.
Hopefully I will meet some of you on the 4X4 trials in and around Gauteng in 2013.
The pictures speak for themselves. I still have a few small cosmetics to do, especially on the interior, but am enjoying her as is at the moment!
My Christmas gift to me from me, and exactly what I wanted!!!!

Very nice indeed and a job well done, Dirk. One more thing you should consider: EFI conversion - you will never regret that!

Dirk where is this Cecil stationed? I want to make use of him but it won't be practical if he is too far away. Guys that do a good job as you said he did is very hard to find.

Hey Dirk,
Looks great!! I am looking at getting my SFA re-spayed and a few bodywork issues resolved. The price you quoted seem reasonable...please advise on what exactly you had done for the 12k and where it was done?
cheers

Looking good!
Busy doing the same with my 89 model! Glad to see I'm not the only one that believes these old bakkies are worth it! I am only at the very beginning and getting the mechanics sorted out - cosmetics and mods are next!
My 88 model rusted away quite badly, but my mechanic took it off my hands to pay for all the mechanical work on my 89 model :)

Re: 1988 Hilux Rebirth - Final
Hi Liam,
The R12k was for a complete restoration of all panels including rust removal and respray. About 90% through the job there was some family fall-out at the panelbeater and my vehicle got stuck in the middle. Made the last 10% painfull as the money was paid, but now they were doing me a "favour". The job was done well, but with the politics there I will not recommend them. The youngster that worked on the vehicle has subsequently left as well for Margate. They charged me an additional R6k over and above for the light fittings, new bonnet and additional labour to clean the loadbed of the old rubber and other odds and ends.
