DIY Integrated Towbar

Post by WiJoSt »

Was fedup with my old towbar system and decided to re-do it.
Build an integrated rear bumper / towbar with the help of Johan Hennig who's out of job at the moment.
The building was done by a lot of measuring, fitting and a lot chop and change as the work progresses.
Material used was purchased from a local scrap metal yard.

Wian, dit lyk baie goed, laaik daardie stewige ysters.

So by-thu-way, Leon Ferreira se bumper is ook klaar en gepas.

See if you can get your hands on a copy of SANS 1505-1:2007 Part 1: Towing brackets and integrated towing devices. There are basically a number of items a tow bar requires to comply.

According to the specification if a tow bar is not SANS approved its illegal. This is the type of stuff insurances feed on. If your vehicle is involved in an accident whilst towing, chances are your insurance won't pay.

Just a small word of advice

Hi Tony.i had a discussion with my insurance broker about this specific subject and according to him this will only be a problem if the accident or claim is a direct result of the towbar breaking because it was not according to spec.

Thank you Tony. But as Kobus said, I build it to last. I've seen after market towbars like Onka and ARB and I dare say mine is more robust, stronger and better (more secure) fitted than those I saw. Also see George's response. The one I had on was manufactured by an approved manufacturer and all I can say is; Thanks goodness I'm rid of it.
