Post by Bester »

Hi guys, what is the best way to spilt or T-off 16mm2 cable? Is it ok just to solder, should I rather use lugs and bolt together and can I get a specific connection blok or thingymajic somehwere?

I personally would use lugs, crimp them onto the cable with a hydraulic crimper and then bolt the lugs together

Jip Cassie, I agree, was considering using the National Luna fuse box holder http://www.nationalluna.com/newproduct2.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to ensure safe connection - or is there any other cover that I can use?

I've you want to use that to insert a fuse in the line, yes, but if it's purely to join the two cables, some heat shrink, isolation tape and sleeve would to the trick

IF you were a bit closer I could have assisted with the hydraulic crimping.

Crimping is definitely the best. But soldering will also work if you cant get to a crimping tool.
On both my previous bakkies I joined the thick cables with soldering.I did not use a soldering iron but used my gas stove to heat it up and put a lot of solder in there. Worked for me

I used this method, you can either use a fuse in it or that bypass that comes with the holder. works ok for me

Hi Guys!
I agree with the crimped lugs being your best and most economical solution.
I did my NL dual bat installation about 10 years ago. At that stage I could not find a suitable big enough fuse.
Thanks for showing me this new fuse from NL. I am definitely getting one!

if you crimp you must sprey techtyl and seal it off properly, otherwise in a couple of years and some water crossings later rust will get between the lug and the cable and it'll make a bad connection.
happened with the original wire from the battery to the starter on my lux, it made a bad contact which used battery current and didn't give enough to the starter to make it turn properly.
