here is my shlef system at the rear of my Hilux,

its made from 3 mm 25x25mm square tubing.
its bolted on the sides and bottom of the loadbed up to the roof of the canopy,
the main reason for the frame is to support the rooftop tent since it is a fibreglass canopy and in harsh conditions i dont think it would have been strong enough.

i adapted it to hold shelves made from plywood so i could access top and bottom items independantly.
and the one side is a kitchen.

my next project is to turn the botoom half into drawers to access items in the rear with ease.

Very interesting concept that you have there for your HIlux's rear area.

I am currently in the process of planning the layout of my Lux rear for long distance travel and camping.

Sven your ideas are great :!: :!: and Im sure you are saving loads of cash by doing things yourself instead of going the conventional route.
Can you give us some sort of figure how much these mods have cost you

yeah it really comes back cheaper in the end but the enjoyment of the creation from start to finish is
really what i love the most.
the shelf system(although not complete yet) would have been really cheap, i had the steel lying around but i would
guess it to cost about R150. will post again when i have finished the drawers.

the roof rack was a little more expensive since i bought frontrunner mounts, they were R 180 each if im not mistaken,
i could have made them myself since there is not much to them for about R30 a piece. the steel would have been about R 300 and then bending about R 150.( i would have to look at the invoices to confirm these figures.)
so roughly R 1100.

not sure what a roofrack costs though since i never looked at buying one, can anyone give me the figures?
ive always liked the basket type roofrack over a wind cheetah type rack and so that increased the price
a little too.

Unfortunately the price of steel has more than doubled from last year, due to inceasing petrol prices (so they say). Anyway, it just makes doing it yourself a little more pricey. :evil:

Well it is still a lot of fun to rather build your own systems and to think up the ideas than to buy it off the shelf.......

Oh hell yeah, it makes it all worth it in the end. I do feel for the few who decide never to attempt the DIY route, they don't know what they are missing.
