Andre, can you give the year model and details to Neil and ask him that he asks Wayne next door to our shop to quote us one the parts listed below. If we have a figure we can see how we can make a plan. Some of the members suggested a fund raising, but lets first get a figure so we can see what the total cost will be. I am sure Wayne will be able to give us a better price.

Headlights
Tail light
Fender trims
Radiator
Front bumper
Brake disks (left one got broken)
Hub, bearing and studs

I have a bumper that looks like it came from either a Kadet or a Corsa which you're welcome to if it's the right thing. I'll take a pic in the morning but I'm thinking more Kadet than Corsa - I don't know for sure because it was abandoned by one of my tenants that did a skip and he used to do auto body repairs.

You would just have to arrange transport.

Slowly making progress

Chassis is straight, panelbeating and painting should be done by the weekend...

Can hopefully get the car home and start putting it back together again during next week

Aiming to do a shakedown on the 3rd after voting

In the meanwhile, been working on an ITB setup

Got a bit done today. Not nearly as much as I would've liked though

Took the bent rear axle out, and replaced with the reinforced one. The new one probably weighs double what a std axle weighs

Here's the bent one:

New one:

Replaced the rear wheel bearings and brake shoes. Decided I'm not happy with the droop straps currently fitted, so I pulled them out and made another plan

Can't really work on the car tomorrow, so I foresee many late nights in my immediate future...

I doubt it would make a massive impact on the handling characteristics. At least it sits very low, and I can now remove weight from elsewhere in the car

Andre why did you make the base plate of the intake so thick? Looks heavy. Also, with it being thick like that will it not retain heat and in turn heat up the intake air?

Something I used on my previous car was a Hondata plastic gasket on the intake. It seperated the intake from the head so it didnt transfer heat to the intake manifold.

I wanted a very gentle slope on the port shape going from round to oval, hence the thickness. I'm hoping it doesn't retain too much heat, but there are ways and means to sort it [WINKING FACE]

As it is aluminium it probably does not weigh a ton, but you obviously have the option to router out excess metal .. maybe even router in some fins to help with keeping it cool.

Well it is alu, so I'm hoping it for reasonable heat dispersion. Was also thinking of perhaps adding heatsinks as a possible resort

Finished up the suspension yesterday. Good thing I checked the right front suspension - ball joint is bent

Moved the battery to the passenger footwell, bled the brakes, made some changes in the engine bay to accomodate the throttles. They will have to wait a while though, as time is running out.

Dropped the car off at the signwriters today.

Tomorrow the engine and gearbox must go in, along with the radiator, oil cooler etc.

The car must run by Saturday morning - alignment must be done.

Tight timeline this...

While I was busy today, I decided to re-do most of the wiring in the engine bay and in the dash. Got that all done - looks much better.

Put the engine in tonight - all the mountings are done (also had them poly'd). Most of the wiring is connected. Still gotta put in the driveshafts, radiator, oil cooler etc

Gonna tow it to the alignment place tomorrow to get that sorted...

Looks like I'll make it...

Heluva busy day today...

Started off early, called it quits about 10 minutes ago. Did all the plumbing, finished off the wiring, slotted the shocks (managed to get what looks like sufficient camber), put the bonnet, rear bumper and fenders on, fitted the lights, painted the wheels, and some other bits and bobs. Did the wheel alignment by eye...

Eventually it was time to start it. Connected the battery terminals, checked that the fans worked, and switch on the ignition... Nada - no hum from the fuel pump, no dash lights, niks... Figure out that the earth for the ignition was loose.

Fix that, swith on the ignition. Furl pump kicks into action, fuel pressure is good. Hit the green button, cranks for about two second, huge backfire, and it comes to life! Success!

Lined up the gear linkages and took it for a test drive. All seems well.

Tomorrow morning I'll take it for alignment again, then it's off to the track... Will fit the bumper and fender trims there as I seem to have lost those weird little bolts...

Ok - update time

Got to the track, finished what had to be done. Passed scrutineering with no worries.

First session I had to bed in the new brakes, coupled to my nerves it was nothing spectacular. Managed a 1:20.1. Not great but certainly no disaster.

Went out for my second session, and put the hammer down. Car is handling like a beaut. Managed a personal best lap time of 1.17.82. I was however very much underweight, but I am over the moon with that lap time.

Only issue I have encountered is a bad dip in power at 5500rpm. We're gonna put the car on the dyno now to smooth out the graph and reduce power by about 3kw. This will mean less weight I have to add, so the handling will be pretty much unchanged.

Let's hold thumbs all goes well tomorrow

Reminds me of the old trick to up the power (above the "legal" limit) and REALLY get the handling sorted. Then de-tune it for the race to pass scrutineering - then you KNOW she will be sitting steady in the tightest of corners.

ENJOY your race weekend !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Race Report – Zwartkops Women’s Day Extreme Festival 9 August 2016

Following the nasty crash I had at the last event, there was an incredible amount of work that had to be done in order to make it to this event. We managed to get the car straightened out and running just in time. On Monday morning I arrived at the track after getting the wheel alignment sorted, and we still had some small bits and pieces to complete on the car before I could go out on track.
We did the final bit of work, and I took the car to scrutineering. All was well and I was given the go-ahead to go out on the track. There was only two practice sessions left in the day for me to see what the car was doing, and I was very nervous about it all. I went out for my first session with trepidation – I was still a bit edgy after the last time I was on track, and I also didn’t know what to expect from the car. I took it very easy, but slowly started getting back into the groove. Managed to do a 1:20.1 which was not spectacular, but certainly not disastrous.

We quickly put the car on the dyno to see what the situation was with power, and found that the car had somehow gained 4kw. Though most people would think this is a bonus, it is actually a problem for us in Superhatch – this meant I would have had to add 80kg to the car.
With my confidence somewhat restored, I went out in the second session and gave it a proper go. The car was handling beautifully with the new stiffened and strengthened rear axle. My confidence grew with every lap, and eventually I managed a personal best time of 1:17.8. I was now fully confident in the car again. I made the decision to rather reduce the power in the car so that I wouldn’t have to add weight to the car and possibly upset the handling characteristics. We reduced the power by about 3kw, and everything was ready for race day.
Race day arrived and we were the first category to qualify. The track was rather slippery, and we had a very short session. I just couldn’t get a proper lap in with all the traffic and slippery conditions, and when all was said and done I ended up 4th on the grid.

Race1
I did not have a great start, but I made up some ground in the first two laps and found myself in 3rd position. There were two Fiestas fighting it out for the lead in front of me, and I was not comfortable with getting involved in that battle. I decided to wait it out behind them, and see what happens. I did not have to wait long for something to happen... As we headed towards turn 8, the one Fiesta tried an overtaking maneuver that did not work out well – he tapped the other Fiesta which sent them both to the outside of the track. This left a nice open gap for me to go through and take the lead. About a lap later the safety car came out for another incident out on track, and we eventually finished the race under the safety car, gifting me the win.

Race 2
With the grid reversal, I had to start the race in 4th position. I had a pretty good start, and managed to safely navigate my way through turns 1 and 2 and was running in 2nd position as we headed on to turn 3. Tony was in front of me, and we were being held up a bit by some of the slower class B cars. There were no safe opportunities to try and take the lead from Tony at this stage, so I once again just held position to see what unfolds. We were not running incredible lap times, and pretty soon Tyler had made his way through the traffic and caught up to me. He had fantastic pace, and soon enough overtook me through turn 4. I knew he would catch up to Tony, and it could possibly present an opportunity for me to get back into 2nd position. While all this was going on, a class A car had dropped oil in turn 6, which made things very tricky. Tyler took the lead from Tony and I managed to slide past Tony through turn 6 with Renier in Tow. Now he was starting to hassle me. We had an epic battle for 2nd place. With two laps to go he had the run on me going up the hill towards turn 5, but out-braked himself and I managed to undercut him and take back the position. He then caught me again on the next lap on the way to turn 4, went past but I had better exit speed and re-took the position in turn 5. Had to use all my tricks to keep him behind me to the flag, and crossed the line in 2nd place.
This was good enough for me to secure the overall win for the day. The biggest reward for me was however to get the car back on track and come away with no incident.

It would have been completely impossible to attend this event if it wasn’t for the help of so many people, and I would just like to express my thanks the following people in no particular order:
- My family. Thanks for your support, help, and above all patience and understanding in letting me live a dream.
- Pro Auto Rubber. Thank you for your continued support through the good and the not-so-good.
- Koos Pretorius from JR Panel and Paint. Amazing job you’ve done to get the car looking and working as good as it does. Thank you so much for the sacrifices you have made during this repair process.
- Isaiah from Nasten Engineering. Thanks so much for all your work, knowledge and expertise in getting the car fixed up.
- Tyler Scott from Episerve Eng and Jestik. Your support and assistance to a fellow competitor is just far beyond what anybody can expect or even comprehend… I just can’t thank you enough.
- Pieter and Neil from 4x4Direct. Thank you so much for the parts you so generously supplied. My thanks can’t be expressed in words.
- Wayne from Wayne’s Motor World. Huge thanks for the assistance with the parts.
- Hilton from ProTek Performance. Amazing work you’ve done on the tuning and setting up of the car. Thank you for going all those extra miles.
- Jaco Kriel for handing me parts even before I knew I needed it.
- Oom Willem from ASAP Spares for parts and imparting with precious knowledge.
- The Superhatch Family. You guys are the best. Your support and encouragement through all of this meant so much more than what you could even begin to imagine.

Our next race will be on 3 September at Zwartkops Raceway. Hope to see you all there!
Thank you for taking the time to read my race report!

No not as such. This is the standings in the overall championship. Class B is generally the most hotly contested class, as that is the class with the most entries. We suffer a bit in Class C at times, as we generally have less entries and therefore get less points.

But yes - sooo close at this stage. With three events to go there is still a lot that can happen.

Also at the end of the year, your 2 worst results get taken from your points tally. At this stage that would amount to 3 points I sacrifice... Gonna be a tight finish it seems...

Some news

In addition to our normal two sprint races on the 3rd of September, Zwartkops will also be hosting the Mopar 3-hour.

I have assembled a team, entered my car in class g (1600 to 2000cc), and our entry has been accepted.

This is going to be quite a test. Lots of work to be done in preparation (and lots of funds to find haha )

We will then also be adding some power to the car's map to enable us to run our targeted lap times without having to kill the tyres and brakes. Thankfully the power is available without having to stretch the engine.

If anybody has some form of comms system they can loan us for the day, please let me know

Aaaaaalrighty then...

Throttles are fitted, car has been tuned. We gained 10kw and 12nm on the previous best figures. The car feels epic under acceleration, and man oh man - it is loud... Really happy with the power and torque graphs. Makes power all the way to limiter, so mission accomplished

Scary thing is that we could probably still get more out of it, as we left cam-timing standard, and we also opted to tune it on MAP rather than TPS (A TPS always decides to call it quits at the most inopportune time). Not to mention I've still got the stock 242deg cams...

Race report – 3 September 2016. Zwartkops Extreme Festival

Practice day

The weekend kicked off with us arriving at the track very early on Friday morning, and I got busy doing the final little bits and pieces before heading out on track. We were sponsored a set of tyres for the 3-hour race by Achilles Tyres, and it was vital that we got some testing done to see how these tyres behave in the extreme conditions of a race.
Tyler took the car out onto the track first, and we ran the tyre pressures as I would run the tyres we normally used at 1.8bar in front and 2.5bar for the rear. This was also the very first time Tyler ever drove my car, but he managed a best lap time of 1:21.1 which was impressive. His feedback was that we needed to alter the tyre pressures quite a bit. I took the car out next after we upped the rear pressures to 2.8bar, and managed a time of 1:20.2. Hilton took the car out next with the same settings and managed the exact same time as I did. We all agreed that the pressures were still a bit low, and I upped it to 1.9 in front and 3.1 at the rear. When I took the car out for the next session the car felt much better – the front was not washing out as badly as before, and the rear was sliding around the corners in a very smooth and predictable manner. We were all happy with the setup as it was for the 3-hour race and knew we would be able to run consistent lap times without killing the tyres.
One issue that we did however encounter was a spongy brake pedal. I went off to find a new master brake cylinder. With this installed we flushed and bled the entire system, and called it a night.

Race day
The day started off with putting the semi-slick tyres we normally use onto the car and adding weight to meet our minimum weight requirement. I went out for qualifying, and the car felt phenomenal. Managed to a lap time of 1:18.5 which was fastest in class. The only worry I had was that the brake pedal was feeling spongy again.
We took the wheels off and had a look at what was happening on the calipers themselves when pressing the brakes, and saw that the caliper was moving due the rubbers that guide the sliding pins being worn. Robert rushed out to the spares shop, and we had the car back together 5 minutes before we were due to be in pre-race paddock. Just made it in time!
Race 1
With the grid reversal from the last race, I had to start in 2nd position. I had a fair launch, heading into turn 2 still in 2nd position behind Alta. I did however have great track position and drive, and managed to take the lead through turn 4. I now had a slightly slower class B car ahead of me, but on the next lap I managed to get next to it through turns 5, 6 and 7 and went past through turn 8. I was now right on the tail of a class B battle, but had a comfortable gap on the rest of my class. I maintained good pace and the gap to my closest competitors remained fairly big.
After about 4 laps I saw the car running 2nd in my class spin out, and I knew I no longer had to push hard. I then just maintained a fair pace and nursed the car to a comfortable win.

Race 2
We got everything ready for the 2nd race, and as we headed down to the pre-race paddock I realized I have a very big problem – the brakes were not working anywhere close to how they should be. I was due to start 2nd last on the grid thanks to the grid reversal, and made the decision to just back off, circulate and try to finish the race. At this point I knew there was just no way that we could take part in the 3-hour race with the brakes in this condition, as we could cause a really nasty accident.
The race started and I just gently got the car going, knowing that I could not dare going into turn 2 at full pace with the brakes not working properly. As I came through turn 1, Alta had spun out and was standing right in front of me. I managed to miss her by the smallest of margins, and as soon as she got going again I waved her through. I proceeded to circulate the track, braking very early and not taking any chances.
After about 4 laps the real problem showed itself – as I exited turn 6 I lost all drive. I pulled into the pits and had a quick look for the problem. I started the car, put it in gear and had a look under the bonnet – the left driveshaft was turning, but the wheel was standing still. Had a look at the wheel and saw the CV turning inside the wheel. It seems the splines on either the hub or the CV had sheared off. This also explains the problem we had with the brakes – there was obviously movement on the hub, which in turn caused the disk to open the caliper. So now every time I got on the brakes the caliper first had to close the gap that had opened before applying pressure to the disk.
This was something that we could never fix in time for the 3-hour, and we therefore had no choice but to withdraw from the race.

So it was a weekend of mixed results. I was overjoyed with the win in the first heat, but also disappointed with the breakdown. This was however the first DNF for the car due to mechanical failure since it started racing, so I really can’t complain.

Thank you so very much to all involved in making this weekend happen. Now we get ready for the one we have all been waiting for – Kyalami on 22 October!
