Well we were off yesterday for next weeks holiday. I finished off the doors and fitted them, took the mirrors apart and cleaned them up. Managed to drop the drivers side fender, got some nasty chips and scratches, so I had to sand it down and respray it today. Fitted the fenders, will align and finish next week when the paint is properly dry. Will finish off the bonnet next.

Roger, looking good and I really LOVE the colour. My son Wade ( 4thgeer on the forum) and with the help of my other son Brad and I,are busy rebuilding his sfa with a total body strip and respray similar to your project.
We have adapted and installed a Merc 300d 5 cyl engine onto the drive chain and have just had the roof lining and floor matts done and are in the process of finnishing the interior fitments..
With the help of Andy ( MUDDOG), we will post the rebuild with pics as soon as we can.

I really admire the way you tackled your project without loosing interest and enthusiasm as the months ticked by. You will be proud once its complete and the sense of pride and achievement will last forever.
Well done.

Last weekend I fitted the new grill, park lights and tail lights. I started fitting the new windscreen and managed to break it. :shock2: :frustrated: Some where along the line there is a small difference with the pirate part roof skins. I needed about 3 mm more space between the top and bottom, the rubber just does not go in and keeps popping out. I tried everything until I cracked the screen, I used a few choice words and left it till I calmed down. I trimmed a bit here and there including the rubber. If anyone else decides to replace the roof skin, please do yourselves a favor and measure the gap before you remove the old roof skin and save youselves a big problem. I finished trimming the frame and rubber in the week and fitted the screen yesterday afternoon. I got it in ok, so now I must get another screen and refit it. 900 rand problem. Today I got stuck into the bonnet and snorkel. Will finish the bonnet off next weekend. Fitted the snorkel this afternoon.

Unfortunate news about the windscreen Roger, but considering the complete overhaul you have done, it is amazing that there was just one oopsie, which was not even your fault.

Looking very good Roger.I also broke a windscreen glass a few years ago after rebuilding my previous 2,8 d sfa.
I then found out that there are various sizes for the windscreen glass and I had fitted the incorrect glass.
I hope this info helps you with your rebuild.

Thanks Tony. I taught myself to fiberglass through trail and error. Today I finished and fitted the door panels. I decided to cover them in cloth instead of painting them. I also made a badge for the grill where the Toyota badge goes. My old grill did not have a badge on.

Thanks James, it has been a long year and a half. If a person puts your mind to it most things are possible. I have been fiddling with thing for the last 40 something years. Most of the time I will try something till I get it right. I am a maintenance fitter by trade.
Yes Peter it is still somewhere in the back of my mind to make storage trays for the front doors. Most of my woodwork tools are packed away at the moment. When the truck is out of the garage I will make some molds and cast some. Some of the trucks came out with them, maybe I can find some old ones and fit them. I see on my old door panels there are marks where they were fitted.

AFAIK the models from '95 onwards had the door trays. You guys might get lucky and find some old ones at a scrapyard.

Got a radiator, been lying in our store all along. Had it cleaned and checked, all good.It comes out of a 2.5 diesel Isuzu 3 ton lorry that we stripped a few years ago to make a farm trailer. It is a little bit bigger than the 2.4 Hilux diesel, about 40 cm higher. I have to move the power steering pipes a bit to drop it down enough. Am busy modifying the cowling to fit.

Well, I started the truck today. It started and ran not too bad. While I was busy adjusting the dist , The cap came loose somehow and broke the rotor. I noticed that the vacume advance is not very lekker, so I am looking for a different distributor. Very frustrating. :frustrated:
It ran for a while and came up to temp for the thermostat to open, seems like it settels at about 90 deg while at a fast idle. So it looks like the radiator is doing it job. Will post again when I have sorted out the few small problems.
At least it is alive. dont know how to post a video so sorry.

Good to hear it's running, just a pity about the dizzy. I'm thinking that you should still be able to get a replacement cap and rotor. maybe even a vacuum advance unit.

Thanks Louis. Been so busy at work the last few weeks as we have started harvesting our grapes. Working 6 days a week at the moment till about the 15 Dec. I did get a different distributor , very nice one. I fitted it and got it all started again. the motor sounds very good but something is not very good as it started to smoke quite bad. on idle nothing, rev it a bit and it smokes bad, white smoke. It does not smell like oil, so I am looking for the problem. I will do an update when I have sorted the problem out. the motor was rebored to max 40 thou, so I only honed it and replaced the rings. Maybe that short cut is the problem, there was no ridge in the bore that is why I took a chance on it being right. If need be I will remove the motor and do it properly. :frustrated:

sorry guys, have been very busy at work harvesting grapes, working 6 days a week from 06h00 till 21h00. Seems like I have a cracked head, pressure in radiator. Am taking the heads off and going to have them done if I can, or I will get other heads and have them done. I am going to have hardened inserts fitted with new valves so that I can run unleaded petrol. They dont want to do that up here by us so I am taking them with me on holiday in Feb to George and will have them done there. Have already spoken to someone there that will do them for me. It costs about 5 grand to do both heads, we still get leaded petrol here by us at a rand a liter more than unleaded but I dont know for how much longer. The lead substitute is almost R100 a bottle, so I will save that money quite quickly I think.

Hi Louis , the truck is running. I still need to replace the heads. They are busy with 2 heads for me, I found 2 other heads and am having them overhauled. I am hoping to get them back next week. I am busy moving house at the moment, just 200meters from where I stay at the moment. So all my stuff is packed away and I go on leave on the 1 st of Feb. I will only be back the begining of March, then I must sort out the garage and get to be able to work to fit them. So I am not very happy about the way things have worked out. Will probably only have the truck going some time in April or May. :frustrated: But I will update again as soon as I get sorted.

:laugh2: :laugh2: Hi Thabo, yes I still have not got around to fitting the heads. Have been very busy with other stuff at the new house. Have also been not to well with the sugar etc. I have also bought a Fortuner 4.0 V6 4x4 and have been enjoying that for a while. I will get around to the truck soon. There is someone bugging me to buy the truck :shock2: so that may also happen. I am just very undecided at the moment of what to do.

Well, either Roger is minus a Hilux or the Hilux is covered by 6 inches of dust?

Haha, Thabo, yes it has got a lot of dust on it at the moment. We have been busy and still battling with the sugar, my blood thickness has also been giving me hell, still trying to get it right. Bleeding from the nose and all sorts of crap. On weekends have been taking it easy. The heads are on but has not been started yet. Will get to it some time.

I've also been wondering a number of times over the past couple of months what happened and why you've been so quiet, but guessed you have your reasons.

I thought of you almost every time I turned my attention to the Essex V6 fitted to "Sifu-Lux". My issues are now mostly sorted after fitting a replacement cam that was re-machined and nitrided, new followers and re-machined rockers. We also did the valves at the same time and threw off the cast iron exhaust manifolds (one had hairline heat cracks), and fitted branches instead.

Hope you soon feel well enough to finish your project. :winkx:
