Dit sit nie in 'n Landie se broek om 'n Toy te recover nie......kry eerder 'n Unimog, hy sal nie breek nie.
Dit kon 'n lelike storie afgegee het.

facts:
from the photos....
vehicle got stuck
tried a snatch recovery from a towball
FAILED
Hearsay:
EVEYTHING ELSE unless it is said by somebody who witnessed the actual incident.
now we can comment on the merits of towbars & towballs/hitches as recovery points but why extend it to things we cannot possibly know?

True that. What can be seen on the fodies is that the welding on the fodie was most definitely the weakest point. Also by the looks of it that Hilux is really stuck and you are going to need a serious snatch rope and recovery points. Probably should have dug away some of the mud in front of the wheels and diff before attemting a snatch. Also a bridal would have saved the day even if they used the same recovery point.

also looks like the vehicle got stuck jsut as the obstacle starts to incline, so the recovery was uphill and all the stress on the towball was downward.

'n Hilux met crawler kom hulle nie roer nie en 'n trekker was oppad toe die rooi wa met 'n warm pilot daar in reverse, hulle deur sy agtervenster aanhaak en toe wegvlieg................... Ek glo nie die ouens in die lux het verwag dit gaan so rof raak nie, maar binne sekondes was dit te laat. Ergste was dat daar 'n massiewe skare op die walle weerskante was, as daai tou koers verander het, het Sasolburg nie genoeg ambulanse gehad nie!

Shocking... but it's a very good lesson for many of us, safety procedures must be followed properly when recovering any vehicle, no matter how stuck the vehicle is... don't skimp because it doesn't seem too serious/too easy! It could cost a life and a lifetime of heartache and regret!
This will certainly made me think twice when attempting a recovery!

Question, and please excuse my ignorance.
Is it the norm at an event were passengers are allowed to remain in the vehicle? Would n't you think due to the known dangers, all surrounding spectators would've been cleared and all non required persons removed from the vehicle?
2nd, in a case where they are snatching, is it not recommended to put the bonnet up? Or is this only when winching.
I don't wanna start a fight but would like to learn more as I've partook in MSA events for 9yrs on a voluntary basis, and had My COC's for off road and track along with all the safety training's required, by NO MEANS am I an expert or fundie but there appears to be alot wrong with the actions on the day.

Any time there is a rope used(whatever type), if the rope is attached to the front of the vehicle, that vehicle's bonnet must be open! Simple!

Anybody not in the vehicle need to be a distance of at least 3 times the lenght of the recovery equipment away from the action

Thanks Gents, answers appreciated.
Cassie, though whats the recommendations for the passengers/or better words, whats the accepted practice for having passengers remain in the vehicle while doing recoveries.
Personally, I wouldn't allow my Family/Freinds to remain in the vehicle, they would have to remain FAR behind either of the 2 vehicles.

Strictly speaking you want as little possible people involved to do the recovery. So you want the least amount of people in each vehicles. But if you follow all safety procedures (safety bridals, open bonnet, safety blanket / rope over the snatch) I would let my passengers remain in the vehicle.

Shaait guys freekin scary. Wie moet betrokke wees by ‘n recovery? Dink die nuwe tread van hennie gaan interesant wees.

Good point Thys... just a pity that some guys have such big egos... that it blocks their ears... and widens their mouth!
Saw this scene at Boegoeberg... father and son recovery... a potentially volatile flammable situation! And then stupid me had to go and ask them about tyre pressure... and the match was lit!

One last question from me... it looks like an organised event... where were the event organisers... or even the obstacle marshal?
