Re: Toyota is leading the way again
looks like two stroke action for the internal combustion part ... thought EU did away with the two stroke due to polution ....
so where is the "flywheel" to keep the motion going to get the "piston" back to TDC ?

Yes it's a 2-stroke, but it has exhaust valves, so perhaps it's a more efficient motor and less polluting than the conventional small 2-stroke motors like one would find on mowers / chain-saws / edge trimmers / small motor cycles etc.ChrisF wrote:looks like two stroke action for the internal combustion part ... thought EU did away with the two stroke due to polution ....

No 'flywheel' required, the pistons are returned by a 'gas spring'.
There seems to be a lot of interest and R&D going into linear generators lately. The principle of these generators is nothing new but new ideas on how to run them are surfacing.

2 stroke is much more efficient that 4 stroke, only problem with 2 stroke is you have to mix the lubricant with fuel. If you can lubricate it in another way EU wont ban it because it wont be polluting.

Re: Toyota is leading the way again
The lubrication aspect is true Pieter, but I don't believe that a 2-stroke is more efficient - more powerful yes, because there's a power stroke with each cycle as opposed to every 2nd cycle with a 4-stroke. However a 4 stroke expels all exhaust gasses before taking in a fresh air/fuel mixture whereas a 2-stroke does not. This means that there is less oxygen available for efficient combustion.

Interesting, it will sound like a two stroke lister.

Re: Toyota is leading the way again
Very interesting! I can see it work. Wonder what drives the "Gas Spring" that pushes the piston back? How does it stay filled? Exhaust gasses from the combustion perhaps?
Also not fair to say that this is a crank-less engine, as yes, though it does not drive a crank or even have one, it will also not drive the wheels either, as this engine is generating electricity and not energy to drive a crank or wheels. If that makes sense - Different application than an engin that drives a crank to drive the wheels, but can be used in conjunction with say an electric motor to drive the wheels.
