4x4ing is a passion that has has brought this forum together, and so too, has been the instigating factor in organising a national GTG. Although I'd love to meet all you guys, I'd prefer to do this on "our own ground" 4x4ing........

Yes, one would save on fuel costs, traveling in a car, but what would we talk about?

The passion that has built this forum, is the same catalyst needed for a great weekend. I just don't think it would be the same, let alone worth while for most, to foot the fuel bill, without 4x4ing and getting to some of the splendid "far out" place our country has to offer. That is after all why we've invested in our 4x4's. Not?

The object of a GTG, is to share in our passion, share in our experiences, invest in a hard days 4x4ing, coming back to a campfire and reminiscing on great day of fun with a couple of cold frosties, and then tackling the long pull home, slightly depressed that such a great weekend has come to and end, but with renewed energy, and a longing for the time to pass..... and the next outing into the great outdoors.
Wade for president..... :)

If the guys want to have the GTG in Cape Town I will be happy to drive their as long as they can promise a nice 4x4ing experience :)

The reality is that CT and JHB are on the two extremes of the scale, so somewhere in the middle is going to affect you guys the most.

If this GTG is to become a reality the following needs to happen.

1) Date - which we have - Easter next year.
2) Venue - central, which appears to be in the middle of no where.
3) People - and this I believe we need to decidied on next.

The reality is that for the national GTG to happen, YOU need to be:

1) Available over Easter next year.
2) Be willing to travel between 600 - 800km, but due to the possibility of the venue not being totally central, this may even extent to the 1000km mark.

So before we decided on a venue, I suggest we identify those who meet the criteria above, and then let these guys decided on a venue. It's pointless us all commenting on a venue, when A is only prepared to travel 200km, but has the biggest say.

My proposal is that we start a list of those who meet 1) & 2) above, and then start a thread about a venue, with only comments from those who are acually going to attend the GTG.

Should I start?

Simon I surely hope your prediction is in the near future to get oil back to a reasonable price. But at this stage the world has to pay for the WAR of the Yanks isn't it.

Ek gooi net 'n klip in die bos!
Wat van Rhodes, meer spesifiek "Tiffendale", die ski-oord. Ek dink dis taamlik sentraal in SA.
Daar is baie 4x4 roetes in die omgewing en kamp plek/blyplek is nie 'n probleem nie.

Andries I actually think that is a very good idea  plenty 4x4 and its central between CT and JHB.
For any of the guys who enjoy fishing there is also plenty of wild trout in the streams in that area.
I have never been up there myself but have heard plenty great things about the place.

Does anybody know were we could get a decent SA map online that we could post on this thread to Illustrate were these places are :?:
For the people who are worried about traveling distance find the half way mark on the N1 between JHB and CT I would guess its somewhere near Colesburg. Now draw a circle + - 200km in every direction (Not literally) and have a look to see what falls inside, maybe then we can narrow down the options a bit and get closer to a decision

I have a serious suggestion guys, take note, say for example at the end of July, would somebody then add all these names up into the different areas, thus say for example there are more people from Cape Town, than the rest of the place working in a percentage way, then the region that has the most people, let them have this event closer to them instead, then the next time we will see again.

Or is this a crap idea?

I have written this letter to Sasol awaiting their reply.

Hello, I am contacting you, to give Sasol South Africa the benefit to be part of this event that we are busy organizing, it will be held next year over The Easter Weekend, by people who own Toyota Hilux 4x4 vehicle's, we are part of a web site chat forum, known as http://www.hilux4x4.co.za this web site is owned by a person down Cape Town way, have a look at this web site and you will see what it is all about, now because we want to have a National Hilux 4x4 event, people do not all live in the same area and thus we are busy looking for a central point to hold this event, but due to our 4x4 vehicle's been heavy of fuel, the cost of the fuel will make it very expensive for most of the people and thus I have a suggestion that with your input of say sponsoring each registered member who is taking part in this event with a full tank of either diesel or petrol, it would make things so much easier for all of us, I have been advertizing Sasol on my 1992 Toyota Hilux 4x4 bakkie for a few years now with signs that were sent to me from Sasol as well as a shirt and cap, however with a National event like this, you would bge the main sponsor and will benefit from it a lot, please give this idea some thought and let me know, if you send me an email, I will be able to send you some pic's mof my highlt modified Toyota Hilux bakkie, I have spent more than R70 000. on it with the mods,
Thankyou

No.

There are currently no members from PE on the list, so it why include the distances?
Oh!! yes and what about Bloem for the Freestate okies
Nah, we're max 700km roughly from anywhere.....

The map and distance log is really only a guide line to help the guys decided if they're in or not. Once we have finalized the list of guys attending, then we can look more closely at the venue.

What I suggest is that we give the list a couple more days, and when switch to a new thread regarding finalizing a venue. What I'll then do, is repeat the exercise with updated distances, number of vehicles come from the different areas, updated venue suggestions if any, and then list a poll to determine the 1st choice and 2nd choice venues.

Niel, you being the initiator and custodian of this thread, I trust this is in order?

Ive heard about good trails near Oudtsoorn so how about we throw that into the mix of venues
I think Simon has the right idea to see were majority of people will be traveling from and making that one of the main points in deciding a venue

Oudtshoorn's got alot of nice trails but it is a bit far fot the JHB guys....

Rooirivier 4x4 would be perfect. Enough camping space for 20 to 25 vehicles, nice trail and play area. Best of all is the cost - R30.00 per person(net vir jou varkie) per night!

Rooipoort's various two-day 4 x 4 trails provide the ideal location for the 4 x 4 enthusiast to test his vehicle. What sets the trails apart from the ones found in the city, is the picturesque Karoo scenery that can be enjoyed while driving on these trails.

Adjacent tourist attractions
Tennis courts are available at the Farmers' Club while the Gariep Dam (100 km from Rooipoort) and the picturesque town of Nieu Bethesda with its beautiful church and owl house are well worth a visit. The nearby Middelburg Agricultural College is also a must-see.

The Northern Cape area also boasts a wealth of historical artefacts dating back to the South African War of 1879. The region is sprinkled with small little towns whose origins date back to the diamond diggings that followed the first diamond found in South Africa. This find sparked the much talked-about diamond rush.

The rich farmland is well suited to sheep farming, especially merino and fat tailed sheep. Colesberg, an important stopover for travellers to the Cape coast, lends itself very well to horse breeding. The well-known veteran South African golf player and racehorse breeder, Gary Player, has made Colesberg his home.

SAFARI PARK
Game Lodge Accommodation

Just 25 km south from Colesberg on the N1 to Cape Town, you will find 3 star luxury, rest and relaxation. Safari Park is on the farm, Allanwater, which is owned by Dercksen and Nazell Olivier. It is a halfway stay-over to all the major cities in South Africa (Cape Town – 750km, Johannesburg – 600km, Durban – 900km, Port Elizabeth – 500km).

Accommodation consists of thatched chalets and luxury Safari Tenthouses. The chalets are accessible from the N1 with two double beds, bathroom, shower, TV and a cosy fireplace. (You’re welcome to bring your own DSTV card) Safe parking in front of each chalet is available as well as nearby braai-facilities. Next to the chalets are fully equipped caravan stands. Welcome to a farm-atmosphere.

In a 500ha game camp, also accessible from the N1, with 500m gravel road, you will find the true meaning of “close to nature” but with luxury. A Safari tenthouse, built on wooden decks, with a view over willow trees and the Elandsrivierspruit, is just the place where you can relax with a sundowner in the hand. It consists of one double bed and two single beds, a kitchenette and a rock-built-on bathroom. Each tenthouse has its own parking and braai-facilities. For the more romantics, a cute rock-built chalet with a beautiful view, awaits you. It’s important to notice that there are only solar powered lights and gasgeysers in the tents and chalet. (We don’t want to spoil the Out-of-Africa feeling)

There are also two en-suite rooms available in the main house. We supply towels, soap, coffee and tea in all of above.

To make your stay more relaxing and enjoyable, a restaurant, shop and curios are available on the premises. The kids can enjoy the pooltable and trampoline. And if you order in advance, we supply tender Karoo lamb and “lekker” biltong and droewors.

To do:

· Hiking, mountain biking, challenging hills for the 4x4 enthusiast

· Game drive – you will find the following animals: steenbok, ribbok, white blesbok, springbok, impala, swart wildebeest, gemsbok, kudu, ostrich, zebra and many more Karoo-veld animals. A wide variety of bird species can also be seen as well as typical Karoo flora.

We cater for the whole market, therefore affordable prizes with quality!!!

This last suggestion by Simon is definitely the most central and been just of the N1 it should be a pretty easy drive for most people 8)
The rates are really good to :D Its quite rare to find a place that still has rates suitable for South Africans most places all target the overseas tourists :x
I did notice that the prices given here are out of season prices so Easter weekend will cost a bit more.

I vote for this Safaripark suggestion. Anything that is not further than 800 km where I can pitch my tent for a reasonable amount is fine with me. 8)

I did phone them, however the owner is away for the next two weeks, his reseptionest (sp) was not very helpful, will get the owner to phone me when he is back, will find out about ratings for the 4x4 trails and if there is any play area as well, you myust remember that the venue has to be suitable for all person's and their vehicle's, these newer Hilux's cannot follow the older ones, we will not even go down the landy and datsun road.
