Hessequas - 24 - 27 April 2010

Post by Mr_B »

Mud, mud and more mud... well actually this was a pretty dry year, but that didn't deter us from finding some seriously muddy obstacles... and getting seriously stuck... first the vehicles:

Jeep CJ6... seriously mod'd, chev 5.7L v8, 35' MT tyres... Mark and Shaun Bastiaans
Jeep Grand Cherokee... 31' MT tyres... Jeep 5.7 V8... Anthony and Sue Bastiaans... camp Papa and Mama
Jeep 4L Sport... seriously uprated suspension... 31' MT tyres... Cindy and Jordan Butler, Chanel Rodger
Land Rover... a very old one... Bill and Irene Butler
Land Cruiser 60 series... 33' tyres... chev 5.7L v8... Michael and the rest of the Cummings clan... + 1(Jarryd)
Toyota SFA 2.2i, 35' tyres... the Kwagga... Craig and Lesley Batchelder...
Toyota SFA 2.2i, 33' tyres... Bolt... Bretton, Kim and Joel Eveleigh... and Dylan Medhurst

This will be a pictorial report back... pictures can say so much more than words... as more pics become available from the various participants I will post them... this may well be the last year we ride this route, as Oliver, the farmer, has sold the farm... we may well assist him in cutting a new trail on his brother's farm in the next few months... we did a little exploration of the proposed 'new' route... rough, very rough stuff indeed...

Pics to follow...

Nice pics, Bretton! .... Brings back a lot of memories  .... many of them not so lekker, like stripping and cleaning out brake drums / alternator / starter bendix .... cleaning and re-greasing of shackles / leaf packs / uni's and prop slip joints ... cleaning of vehicle interior / upholstery .... etc., etc. :(

A lot of fun while it lasts, but not worth it for me any more .... too much P.T. for me nowadays! :D:
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Very true Andy, I spent 3 hours just cleaning the undercarriage thoroughly, but for me it will always be worth it, yes it is hard on the vehicle and tests them to the limit, but hang it's fun, real good, dirty fun...

I was very sad to hear that Craig sold the Kwagga... that thing is a beast of note, needs a little tlc... and it will be 100% again... your friend can contact me if he needs help with the fuel injection, the vacuum idle up circuits need to be replaced with a idle control valve, much more reliable and the bakkie will start much better!

I've got some video of the Kwagga in action, if I have time I'll post some vid footage from Hessequas!

Kwagga's new owner is an auto electrician who enjoys playing around under the bonnet!
I'll let him know that he can contact you.
Thanks

Reynhard, after a bit of playing like this, the lux gets some serious TLC on the under carriage...
... a 3 hour clean with the HP water cleaner
... engine bay/radiator clean with HP water cleaner
... remove and clean drum brakes and calibrate
... compressed air clean for radiator and brush off
... compressed air clean the leaf springs
... lube the leaf springs with power parrafin
... check oil in diffs, gearbox and transfer case for contamination and levels
... check engine oil, clutch and brake fluid... for contamination and levels
... using pneumatic grease gun, grease shackles, prop shafts, universals etc...

In fact the undercarriage has probably never been in better condition... still got to clean the interior... so pics:
