Recommended trails near Jhb?

Post by Jaco Versfeld »

Hi there,

Which nice trails are near (approx 1 hour's drive) from Johannesburg, that you can recommend?

I have done Berakah, Bass lake and Hennops (can't remember which one, think there was a Van Zyl's pass or something), but would like to try a new one.

I am thinking of Dewildt or Moegatle.

Thanks,
J

Have you driven Rhino Park outside Pretoria (towards Cullinan/Rayton)?
Then there is also the LA Sport Adventure Track for LA Sport Pretoria East, out on Lynwood Road.

As Chimes nat is soos nou, is jy gewaarborg om vol modder te wees.

Went out to de Wildt with some friends a few weeks ago. Nice place with excellent braai facilities & picnic spots. close to Brits/Harties clean ablutions and very nice 4x4 trail. Not too technical but reasonably challenging in some spots. Here's some pic's taken during the day.

None of the above in a 2WD.....sorry!

We are going out to De Wildt this coming weekend 16th (see GTG Gauteng) you are welcome to join, however you would have to drive with someone with a 4x4

See: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=25505" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Personally I do not know of any trails around JHB that are 2x4 friendly.....

A lot of people with plat cars and 4x2's also visit the place for picnic outings but the actual track is not really for 4x2's - I guess one can take the escape routes and take some pics of the game in a 4x2. I did see some softies doing it and they had a great time. Softies i.e Honda CRX, Freelander,& a RAV. Nice place you'll like it

The Rav, Freelander and CRV are all AWD vehicles. They may not have the ground clearance but they have the traction which may make all the difference. If you have diff lock it will certainly help, but it would be best to consult with the trail owners first. ;-)

Nabeel, I've done De Wildt with my 4x2 kz with diff lock - if you are careful and sensible you can do many of the obstacles, and they all have escape routes. But it it tough on your vehicle and the route, so be sensible! They will recover you at a cost if you get stuck  .
It's a nice spot for an outing, with good facilities and not too pricey either.
Bosvark is ok, but the front section is deliberately muddy, and that red mud just does not wash off. My engine compartment is still red! If they still allow you into the back mountain section you can have some fun there, but it's quite rocky, so tyre pressure is important...
The only way to get to know your vehicle's capabilities is to try one of these routes, but again,be sensible! With a 4x2 your insurance is going to laugh at you if you roll your van on a trail...
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.
